    I know I don't know the secret handshake in here but I was in the mood to make some conversation with you guys.....

    My BIL is getting an Avalon Astoria insert installed in the near future. Anything you guys can tell me about them, good or not so good? Or do I have to produce the beer first? :D

    A couple peeps have had them. Can't recall any complaints. If I remember correctly its got a big azz hopper.

    Very unfamiliar with that brand and their models.

    As for beer, we will treat this as a hostage ransom situation. Obtain the cold beer, put it in a brown bag, leave this bag on the park bench, and walk away (dont look back or call the COPs). We will contact you at such a time to release the information.

    I thought I was the cops in these parts, :rofl: :lol:. I guess that means I ain't gettin' nuttin..... :confused: ;) A brown bag full tho... you guys are cheap dates. :drunk:

    One of the local hearth shops here is pretty heavy with Travis Industries for both wood and pellet. In fact, I can't name any other brands they carry.... :confused:

    I had an Astoria FS for a couple of years. I had no problems with it, at all. Great heater, and Travis makes a good, solid stove. Not sure how big the hopper on the insert is....the FS was 120lb.

    Is this a new or "pre-owned" unit MM?

    Should be a new install. Going into an existing fireplace, I am assuming they are venting up the existing masonry chimney.

    Should be a good, solid heater. Only downside is that parts only come from a dealer.

    I hope they're running a liner up the entire chimney w/ a cap on top.

    Travis products have a proven reputation. Avalon is one name, but Lopi is another that they make and is very well known.

    That unit is a solid unit, but I don't know if it does High/Low? I believe from Donny boys notes, it's On/off only. Nothing wrong with that, but some prefer high/low mode when it's really cold.

    Pellet stoves are very convenient and very... Wait, did someone say Beer?? :drunk:

    damm it, who stole my 155 shells? Look you whole tree burners coming to the pellet heads without an offering of the elixir of the gods is grounds for all kinds of horrible things to befall you. Wine, mead, or a decent single malt can be substituted in a pinch.

    From the manual:

    Hopper Capacity (based upon hopper extension position) ......................................... 48 to 89 Pounds.

    If there is enough space where it is being inserted you have quite a bit of fuel capacity, a lot better than the puny amounts on some inserts.

    Solid maker just check out the dealer if it is a new stove from a dealer. Most important single step is get a good dealer.

    The thing that gets you on inserts is lack of room for the hooper and improper block offs, remember the heat is supposed to come out of that place the stove is shoved into and not go up the flippen chimney or into the brick work, be careful to have proper airflow for the convection system and if possible draw your combustion air from the area around the vent inside the chimney.

    One thing to note: AFAIK, the Astoria has been discontinued by Travis....they only show the AGP stove on their website as an insert. Is this stove a leftover?

    I don't know.... I wasn't real involved with the purchase. I do know that it will be a professional install and that inevitably he will be asking me questions.

    They have a big Lopi (wood eater) insert in the basement that heats the house well but after two winters, I think he's decided that wood is too much work for them. I know she wasn't cracked up that a bug might come out of the wood stack by the stove. :eek: :rofl: :lol:

    The insert will be going into the living room fireplace on the main level of the home. The chimney is a double flue masonry type.
