Tonight I made a pit stop and picked up a Bradford Pear from my parents house that was storm damaged. My father cut it up and stacked it I dropped what was left the other night for him. This tree was planted 28 years ago and was a gift from my late grandfather to my parents. It is very heavy and made the truck squat really good! In my experience thats normally a good sign.
hurts to loose a tree that was a symbol of something. Your parents will deal with it. I would tell you the best thing you could do, besides cleaning it up, would be to consider planting another tree. Doesn't need to be a pear. just plant a tree that can be another memory tree.
And he would be happy it will be keeping things warm over the winter. I have been burning B pear since Oct, and it is great, GREAT burning wood. Packs a good btu, but has a fair amount of ash. Id pick it up again if I got the chance to, definitely!
Here on CL about 3 weeks back someone on NE part of town had one they wanted removed.Hard to tell really good from the pic but I guessed it to be maybe 25 ft tall & no more than a foot in diameter,max.Near a minor powerline (would be easy removal with my pole saw & a couple small ropes) but had lots of brush for its size too.
I dont think it would be that great for smoking meat with. It has a "funny" smell when it burns. I do like to burn it in the stove though. Might burn a piece or two this weekend.
Yes. Try it on some fish. IIRC chicken will discolor though...... From a BBQ forum. Pear is similar to apple and produces a sweet, mild flavor.
It is soooooooooo heavy look and it doesn't appear to be water but really dense wood. My maul just bounces off the top like its a rock. When I ran it through my splitter it was so hard it bogged down. It takes a lot to big that splitter down its a beast.
Well guys I am ashamed to admit I didn't have any PPE gear or saws with me when I dropped the pear. That's not normal this time of year they are usually in the truck box. Well my dad has a nice little 16" husky that I used to clean the break up and drop the other half. It took me a minute to get used to the lower power but I like that little saw. Another one for the wish list ! So anyway got some pics of what not to do when cutting I'm never living this down The front side was so bad I had to clean it up before I could make the back cut and the back cut was a steep one to knock it where I wanted it to go. The top had some lean to the side but it wound up plopping right where it needed to go. Now boys and girls never be an idiot like me and cut without PPE that's when you get hurt and make it to youtube for something stupid like getting hurt ( which by the way I didn't. )
That was a big pear tree. The one I cut up was only about 1/4 cord and most of that was branches. But you are right about that stuff being very heavy. I think I'm going to stack it with the mulberry I brought home last week.
Sean judging by the splits I have so far it looks like a good 2 years before it will be ready. Is that the impression you get ? Very heavy and a high moister / sap content.
Yeah that sounds about right. Very heavy stuff, I probably wont be burning it for 3 years. Im pretty well set for the next 2-2.5 years, Im guessing it will burn like the Mulberry so I will be stacking it with that stuff.
The only way you will be forgiven is if you come over here and put that 3' extension on my chimney. Only then will it be considered. Oh, and if you bring your wife, she will not be allowed to climb the ladder.
