cleaning question?

    nope, not normal....looks like creosote, a byproduct of a poor burn.....question is, was it already in the pipe you were given, or did your unit produce it?

    If the stove is producing it? Then something is wrong. Very wrong.

    If it is from the PO? Then it needs to be cleaned proper, to keep it from making a bad situation, come from a good running stove.

    Actually I have been watching the rain tonight and I am pretty sure its blowing into the pipe a little…. Not bad but enough! That selkirk cap isn't the best. I think I am gonna have to look for a better cap to fix it.

    even though I am not a fan of Selkirk, no cap is totally watertight.....given the pics tho, I think its more than that...certainly something to not ignore. I would tear down and clean ALL the pipe, as well as the stove, and I wouldn't screw around waiting.....if its just wet fly ash, fine, its clean then....but if its creosote...you know, FLAMMABLE creosote?, not worth waiting till you finally get around to it. I am hoping it was in the old pipe, because if the stove is doing that....ugh

    The problem appears to be the crappppppy Selkirk design of the flex 90degree section. The leak like a sive... I am about as far away from a fan of Selkirk as one can get at this point. But free is free... So far every joint has had to be cemented inside and out every pipe has warps inside of it none of the sections are matching up with each other even though it's all stamped as the same pipe and the fleflex 90 inside has had to be caulked over every single bend with a very heavy bead. I am just annoyed now..... Any other issues and I am going to buy Simpson like the wood stove. :( much better quality... Like I have the money for that lol.

    No mam pellets. I was venting a little is all lol that pipe is old and worn on the gaskets I think. The two sections from 343amc where great :thumbs: but everything else just doesn't fit well. I didn't realize it till I was outside with a flashlight watching and could see smoke out of every joint on the flex 90 at the top. It is fixed now though I caulked the snot out of the flex 90 and no leaks so far.

    I dunno.....free is rarely free in truth I guess, after factoring in the extra time and effort, but I guess it all comes down to how much we value our time....

    Yeah I remember the old simpson pellet vent leaked like crazy too, had to foil tape or silicone every joint. The new stuff is better but still not perfect. When dealing with a pressurized exhaust it can always be a problem, but high temp silicone is your friend lol
