I cut this tree a couple days ago. The top had broken off so I wanted to get the rest down because if it stayed up, water would get in and it would turn punky fast. So, today I hauled out 4 loads and there will be at least one more load. Prime stuff here!
I agree thistle. It is sort of a shame that I don't need it next winter. lol But I might do some sorting anyway and mix it in with the ash we already have stacked up.
Yes. That is how we like to get our elm. Get it before the bark is off and it splits hard. Much easier when you let them go like this. I think altogether we will end up with about 8 or 9 loads from this one tree.
Can't ask for more Dennis, you have no snow on the ground and time to do stuff outdoors. I hope your back is doing ok.
It sounds like the no snow may come to an end this weekend but we'll see. It was cold working today with that wind and 16 degrees. The good part is that the mud is now solid. I even drove across some ice without breaking through.
I'm heading out friday to do a little bit at my satellite wood site, and it's for the same reasons...no snow on the ground and I have some time. I look at it this way, if you have to do it this spring anyways you might as well use the time and great conditions we have now. Careful on the ice Dennis
Well, we pretty much always do the cutting in the winter. Many years we'll be done around the first of the year though. For several years I kept track of the weather and our cutting and found January 10 to be the date for the weather turning sour and we'd quit cutting then. Split after the snow melts or at least wait until it warms up a bit. I like 30's and 40's for splitting and stacking.
Good work there Dennis nice haul today, great stack of rounds you got going there. I spent most of day the working on equipment one of those days when everything turned bad then worse and then I just gave up for the day a lot better now here by the fire. Yes, we did have quite a bit of sunshine. A few snow showers this morning but they moved out quickly. Driver, we know how those kind of days go...
Now I know those big rounds didn't walk themselves to the top of the load. You must be feeling pretty chipper ! Dry or not, I call them rollers. You roll them up a ramp/2x6 ? Primo wood there, will make some great splits Some fun to split ones, for sure !
The big ones, if I can't get them up with the cant hook then the trailer will tilt so then I can roll them in. But the trailer is low enough so that most times I can stand the log on end and, using the cant hook flip it up onto the trailer. One problem today was that I could back the trailer up to them but it was on a downhill. Not much of a slope but just enough to make it interesting. Still got the job done. I'm glad my wife was not there watching though.
Darn purty load of wood Sav. I have one like that I've been eye balling. Might get out in the morning and cut a little. Happy New Year.
