Give mastermech a heads up on what you are looking at. He'll get you bidding/buying on what would be good.

You'll get the best gains with the 039 OEM P&C...
There are a lot of complete re-power kits out there, but the port timing #'s are not all the same on the after market jugs..
All seem to work OK, but not all perform the same..

To be fair, that cylinder was not a "bolt-on" install. I modified it prior to installing it. It ran good, did not want to rev high with no load but held RPMs well in the cut.

The 550xpat is no longer in my collection (had it about three weeks). It's nice for yard cookies, but just too flimsy for any real firewood gathering.

Yes. I bought mine last year a month or so after C-M was brought to the MS 261, but not from stihlusa. I had to go to stihl.ca to get it.

Cheesy starter, goofy feeling long travel throttle lever, fasteners loosening up, cheesy ineffective air filter, joke of a felling dawg, inconvenient outboard clutch and brake, wimpy chain tensioner, and on and on.

Well done fellas. The OP inquires about upgrading the p/c on his 029 and less than two pages later it's a Stihl vs. Husqvarna debate... :picard:

No weight penalty either. My advice is usually to buy the most powerful saw on any given chassis for the most bang for your buck.

That sounds like sound advice to me! Back when I bought the 023 they were expensive as I paid $300.00 which was a lot back then.. They made them pretty good back then and made to last.. Many cords have been cut with that saw..
