Well I helped another member (seriesiii109) limb a veeeeery old Cottonwood today. While I was safely on the ground with the camera, he was on the ladder wielding the Stihl 044. The 50 foot limb came down without incident and I look everything over, I then said to Chris, there's a lot of water next to that limb. Still in the tree his reply was WHAT, I then stated it's bubbling up from the ground, down from the ladder he goes and sure enough the water is flowing free now. We turn off the water main at the street and it's not slowing down, so the limb is cut and rolled out of the way (leak is under the limb), the property owner comes home and said it might be a line from the well. The pump get's turned off and the water flow stops. Problem solved, by now it's dark and we begin to dig hoping to locate the broken line, sure enough about 24" down we find a 1" pvc pipe broken at the joint. So off we go for supplies and some quick chow, cut out the bad piece and make the repair. After some hot tea the pump is turned on and we check our work, no leaks. Tomorrow the main trunk might get cut, we're not sure if the saw bar will be long enough. No pics right now because I left my camera on the property.
Yes the limb was responsible for the broken pipe, I took some video but I don't think I got one of the limb falling.
On with the show; The first limb is to the left on the main trunk closest to the house. The limb cut up, the main trunk, and the Chris after the checking a just sharpened chain, CHAIN-1, CHRIS-0.
Looks like you can cut it with that saw. But that seems a bit weird that the falling limb would cause the break is a water line 24" down.
I was just there to provide medical care, I'll let seriesiii109 tell that story. No the saw wasn't running.
I use the file hooked on the back side of a cutter to pull the chain forward. I slipped once ,pulling it by hand, backwards. self teaching moment & several bandaids. on 3 finger tips. lots of blood & pain, helps etch in stone "what not to do" deep into memory
Ahhhhh pictures, dats more better! I'm guessing that's a 660 with that long bar. What is the bar length? How do you like that Timberline Sharpener? I've got one but I have trouble getting it set correctly on the bar, but when I do nothing, and I mean NOTHING, get a chain sharper.
Ha... pain is the ultimate inspiration, huh?! My honey growls when I ignore little small pain lessons my grandson self inflicts. Good to toughen him up and help him choose his next moves, I say... ...
You guys did a little more than you were bargaining for... having to make an underground repair too...
Good to have that one out of there. Big heavy & crap on you 4 times thru the year. Least favorite tree, when they cotton here, it's like snow & it plugs my Greenhouse screens.
