Well its decemberand I veburned through my " shoulder wood" about 2 cords of free catawbwa wood. (OK NOT GREAT WOOD BUT FREE) getting ready to start burning my 2 yr old ash. Probgonna have to buy wood. Does this dis-qualify me as a wood hoarder. My source of free wood has dried up. Not the end of the world I guess.

Naw, as long as you get those stacks re-stocked eventually . Make sure the wood you're buying is good dry stuff, gonna be mighty hard to find this time of year

As long as you are seeing firewood in your dreams, you're a hoarder LOL :)

So you have to buy, not the first or last to do that.
You'll know a lot more of how much wood you need for winter after you have a full winter of burning.
Just add 15 - 20% to be on the safe side for bad/long winter's.

    Keep scrounging when you can,
that'll reduce what you need to buy.

Live and learn my friend. My first winter was bad, my second year not as bad. After that the stacks of dry wood grew and problems disappeared. :)

Thanks for the support. Local guy has some that I know is seasoned. Not sure on the price but gonna hit him up if reasonable. Thanks for the offer sean. Not sure where you're at I am about 30 minutes se of columbus. Wasnt sure how to guage it after last winter's freakishly could winter. Got about 3 chords of ash left. On the upside scored about 3 large full size pickup loads of fresh cut maple and oak. Free. Big rounds. Good start on next year. Its all good.

That's a little ways off, I'm in North Canton so if your south of Columbus your a good 2.5 hours away.

That's good news on getting more free firewood!

I bought scraps from a pallet company many years ago in a jam. I had to pay extra for delivery, but they guaranteed the wood was not pressure treated etc. PIA to bring in but I was warm that winter while my husband traveled most the time.

We had an old pre epa firebox, so scooping out the nails in the ash was not a problem. I neglected to look if that would work with your stove......

Jealous, I can't find anyone who's selling pallets at all, including for stacking wood on, now I'm down to making my own.:(
I survived my first year partly due to pallets from work, they burn hot and are almost always dry, to the point you could light it them with a match.

I'd ask around at places like lawn mower/snow blower dealers. Places where their deliveries arrive on big, custom-made skids. A sawzall/saber-saw will knock that down into burnable bits real quick. Even if you have plenty of lg splits, it's great kindling.

One such local dealer piles his scrap skids by the road for trash pickup. Now & then, I help with that. Worst case, beats freezing.

Why lock yourself in to pallets? You can cut a couple saplings or use some limbs. Two of them laid down the stack on top of them. That way you won't have any problems with pallets breaking either and even though you will have to replace the saplings, it won't be often. I have some right now that were cut about 8 years ago or longer. Only a couple of them got punky and broke.

You can see the saplings we laid down to stack the wood on. They work nicely and you can make them any width you want. Nothing to trip over either.

It doesn't matter where it comes from! Buy, cut and haul whatever it all costs money in the long run. Your a hoarder if your concerned about not having enough! Yup you qualify. :D
