    Hi everyone, I'm Tom.

I have a problem with wood hoarding. I'm new here, but I've been coping with this affliction for all my life. It goes back several generations. My grandpa's hoarded wood, my parents hoard wood, and I hoard wood.

I may not have as big of a wood hoarding problem as many on this site, but I still have a problem with it.

I cut wood, haul it, split it, stack it, then burn it.

    It's a cyclical problem.

Is there any hope for me?

Thanks Scotty! I burn about 2 cords a year in my house. I've bought wood off of cl in recent years, but due to me having extra time this fall, and wanting to save $, I cut my own this year. I usually cut more for the cottage up north than I do down here in Cedarburg, since I only have an acre lot here. The only wood cutting I've done down here at this house has been tree trimming as it's mostly lawn with a couple of birches, 3 kinds of maple, a couple big ash trees, a honey locust, a couple of fir trees, and a crabapple for mature trees. There are some smaller walnuts and such to on the lot lines, but mostly a lot of lawn.

Hoping to learn a lot more from this site than I already know.

Welcome Horkn to the land of the woodenheads! You've become a member or the best wood addiction help/support group available world wide. The first step in controlling your addiction is to admit to your addiction and you've done that! The good news is you are at least as nutz and the rest of us!! The bad news is you are at least as nutz as the rest of us! :lol:The brutal truth is there is no hope that you, or any of us here, will ever be cured of our wood hoarding, chain saw collecting addiction. :( We can only hang out here and chat with other addicts in an effort to improve our skills as sawyers and wood burners. We are a doomed group - doomed to enjoying the outdoors, the good company of like minded people and beating the high cost of heating our homes, and that ain't all bad! We're glad you joined us, but remember :ithappened:or it's just another fairytale!

you could always introduce and convince in-laws to heat with wood

that's usually a guaranteed solution for an overabundance of firewood

they can sponge off of you and you can keep clear of 12 step programs

    win/win

if you plan it well you never even have to see them
let them know you're coming and could use some help unloading the truck and stacking - you won't see them
let them know you could use some help brushing the chimney- you won't see them then either

    Welcome to the forum Tom.

That is good wood cutting and burning go back a few generations in your family....so long as you don't believe everything they may have told you! That is, most of the older folks (Me????) tend to cut the wood then burn it. Sometimes with only a month or 2 of drying some none. Also they tended to split as needed. That may have worked in those older stoves but even then, it was not the best. The newer stoves definitely want good dry wood and that is why we preach the 3 year plan. Check out the link below and there is a .pdf file you can download if you so like. Good luck and good to have you here.

OK, some details. Here's my fire place. I just got a new phone, so I don't have all the pics easy to access. I'll log in with my old phone and post more pics ( saw, hauler, etc) The house has forced air NG furnace, but I burn wood as it's a much nicer heat source, and the fireplace is in the lr with the main couches and TV. It's a 1700 sq ft open concept ranch. The fireplace is probably not very efficient. It just has a fan that blows through the wood rack. I'll look in the forums for ways to improve heat capture from it. We have a lopi stove up north, but the wife likes the open flame look vs the super efficient burning stove like the lopi. The cottage also has an lp and wood boiler inline with multiple zones. That setup is a lot more elaborate and efficient.

Hell. I really realize my problem is bad when my new phone is real teak wood backed. I tried to match it to my old correct craft ski boat with its teak swim platform and other teak bits

I cut wood just for this season so far. I cut on a friends land and my parents woods about a half hour away. I've only cut up dead standing and other trees that were felled about a year and a half ago. Most of the wood I have is elm and cherry, with a bit of shagbark Hickory. I'd like to cut up more weeks for next year in the coming weeks, but having wood pre cut in the woods is what I call Mexican wood. Nacho wood, if someone else takes it. I should make a stacking area at the house so it seasons here and it's ready when I need it. My buddy that has the land I cut on also burns wood. I told him about this site.

    Welcome to the hood:thumbs:
My hearth looked about like that and then I put this in. The full view and better heat transfer...and yes the GF had to approve of the view (the dogs don't mind it either)
