I would like to do something like this in my garage however it doesn't need to be so fancy. My thoughts are to use the sandwich meat zip lock containers and stack them on of course a pallet stand. I haven't formulated any farther than that... What do you guys do for parts organization ? Got pics ? Thanks Pete
I have ammo cans and coffee tins everywhere full of assorted random junk. One day Ill get them organized I like what youve got posted up there but I dont know if I can get that organized.
Pete, I know you like cheap so how about an old wooden dresser? Partition off the drawers into the size bins you want. You could possibly put pallet pieces in place as partitions.
mayonnaise and peanut butter jars also have the cardboard versions of those plastic containers on a metal bookcase stand picked up at an auction. I've had to wrap some box tape around those with real heavy stuff like brass bolts in them
I've seen this a lot, but with the lid screwed to a board. This lets the jar hang. Not sure the advantage of that, but it's an idea.
They don't fall off the shelf and break. Course, that's when jars were made of glass. Now they are plastic and tough as heck to get the label glue off completely.
Stihl chainsaw boxes with the tops removed and the fronts cut at an angle. The boxes are super-duty strength and hold up well. Also big enough that I can get bigger items like air filters and belts in them pretty easy. My dealer supplies me with as many as I want for free. Backpack blower boxes are da bomb for moving as well.
I got 2 large bolt bins and 5 HUGE part bins 6'H x 6' W at an auction for a grand total of $40. Awesome !
O guys I kinda had an idea the other night and yes pallets are involved I'll put pics up when it's done. Thanks for the tips guys ! MM I wish I could get those saw boxes readily but I don't have that kind of access.
Just ask. You would be surprised, most stores would happily save you a few rather than deal with breaking them down and hauling them out to the dumpster.
When I built my work bench along the shop wall. I elected to put drawers in so I could see what junk I had when I looked Drawers are working well
You just gave me a totally unrelated idea Dave. I have a bunch of leftover wood flooring that would be perfect for the bench tops!
Works great. give it a coat of Johnson paste wax, not much stick to it & stuff slide on it easy. Hit the sharp cut corners with sand paper to dull them a bit, very sharp corners.
Don't have a photo right now but I use one gallon plastic milk jugs, cut off the front and leave the handle. Over the years I have collect milk crates and put 4 of the milk jugs in each crate, then I just stack the crates, usually I write on each milk crate what is in each plastic milk jug. This way I can quickly locate what I am looking for. Another advantage that I have discovered is everything is very mobile. I can pick it up and take it with me if I need to go work on rental property that I have. The next thing I discovered is Orange juice quart plastic jugs work also with 12 quarts fitting in a milk crate sort of for the smaller items. It took me about a year to purchase the milk crates usually for less than $3 ea. I got the idea when I had a carpenter that worked for me and he used milk crates for his tool box. Like right now in my truck I have my straps all in two milk crates, all organized and not tangled up. There are probably other good variations to this system that I haven't thought of.
