There has been a larger black cat brave enough to come into our fenced yard, not sure what he is after.... I can't help but feel badly for him, luckily the weather has been mild lately.

    What would you do?

He's there for a reason. Maybe the cat has noticed some activity on your place and is trying to clean up shop for you. They love field mice..

He's mostly been out by BBQ by the RV. We spent the summer out there during remodeling the house and used the grill alot.

I get stray cats occasionally at my place. If there isnt too many I leave them alone to get the field mice and chipmunks. If they get too over populated they need to be thinned out.

I get strays here too. They keep the mouse population in check and I don't bother them. Works out for both parties. It is amazing how the mouse population expands quickly if there isn't one on patrol.

Had bird houses up for many years and couldn't figure out why nothing would nest.
One Feb morning I was putting my work boots on at the steps and stooped over to tie them and was greeted by strong cat pee smell. This continued and the next dusting of snow we got I saw cat tracks coming down the walk and backing up against the step. Yeah ,,,,,, then I got pizzed.
The last 4 years I've caught over 100 in a single box trap . Quit marking them down on the barn wall at 100.I rarely saw one roaming around. Hard to believe there were that many in the shadows considering the population of coyotes here.
This last year I had 2 pairs of bluebirds and many pairs of some kind of insect eating bird. Very tiny with a long beak. Constantly hauling bugs into the houses.
I'll take the birds over the disease riden , stinkin cats any day.

You could catch it in a live trap and take it to the animal shelter...or something. We have a big hayfield across the road from us where people regularly drop off their unwanted cats. Coyotes get some of them, others linger down there sometimes for months. I don't mind them, as long as they stay down there, but the ones that live long enough eventually make it up here. It usually starts when the motion light that's pointed at the chicken coop starts going on at night. Then they start getting more bold and pretty much do whatever they want around the house, setting off sensors and whatnot.

About four years ago, there was a particular cat that would come close to the house, even when we were around. One day, as the wife was coming in the door after work, our toy fox terrier saw the cat as the wife opened the back door and bolted after it. The cat ran to the hayfield and the dog followed. As the dog ran across the road, a minivan ran him over while the wife stood and watched. He lived, but since that day I have zero tolerance for stray cats.
We just noticed a new one a few nights ago, it never ends.

Like others, we know what the cats do with the bird population. To top it off, we had a neighbor (since moved) who had around 30 cats but that number varied a lot. My wife has 5 or 6 bird feeders and even keeps a heated bird bath so they get water all winter. Cats are not welcome here.

On the other hand you can just imagine. My wife owns a nice Ruger .22 rifle. She didn't keep count this year but last year she got either 35 or 36 chipmunks. Now realize how small of a target that is and you know my wife knows how to shoot and shoot well. We don't have much of a cat problem around here now.

Did she tell you that a chipmunk always gives you a second shot? After the first shot they look around and they're like what the heck was that. Then on the backflip shot, they find out what the heck was that. Ask her, she'll tell you.

Our rabbit populations are way down and the only perps I can think of are the cats.

WW, if the cat is just sorta hanging out and not creating any problems, I'd leave it alone. But...
At the first hint of issues, I'd dispatch it quickly. azzhat cats that stake out your territory as their own can lead to problems.
    Been there, done that.

Aggression towards any existing pets, marking it's territory (urine all over), claw marks on stuff, that sort of thing.
Had a stray in Empire that loved me, but clawed the heck out of the wife one night. 2 went out, 1 came back.
They have to behave themselves, otherwise they're just another predator hanging around. Think of them as such until they prove themselves to you.
