Today I was working in a Lull basket 3 stories up doing some exterior trim on a building. It was around 20-22 deg all day with a 10 mpg breeze. My problem was lack of movement and I was unable to keep my fingers warm. Does anyone have any experience with hand warmers? I think this would have been the perfect situation for them.

These buggers work pretty well. I keep a pair in my pockets late season hunting or if I'm standing on the ice all day. Pretty cheap and they last 4-6 hours typically. I usually get them at FF.

The 10 hours it says on the package is pushing it IMO.

I have used these for several years (severe raynauds). IRREPLACEABLE. I , like bogydave said, use them in my shoes too, the foot ones are only slightly bigger but cost more. There are usually deals on them by the case right before xmas, or NOW, and I have also seen them on clearance after xmas (several years ago). Hubby has concerns with disposal of them so they don't start a fire in the trash so I am careful with them. Also, I have had one or two over heat, they can damage tissue if you are numb for whatever reason. My rheumy warned me that some of his other patients have sustained ulcers from bad ones that overheated.

Since extended family has learned over the years how many of them I use, I too also get them from Santa :)

I looked into heated gloves, but they are pricey and I am rarely out of the warm house. Though if I find a deal on them this xmas I will be buying a pair for my husband that is often out in the frigid cold. I would have considered them for me but they all used batteries that were heavy for a small woman. Uncle Augie I think has awesome boot warmers. They are pricey too, but if its affecting your work........I wonder if you could use those boot warmers tucked in the palm of your gloves? The boot warmers he has seem to alot more mobile than the D battery heated hunting socks we have all seen.

Greenstick, I've been wondering the same thing. It seems like one of those Zippo handwarmers tucked into a hoodie pocket would be great.

we use the activated charcoal hand warmers for hunting. They work great! If you get too much air to them they can get very warm and die faster. If you keep them in a pocket or glove they can last many hours. With disposal, I just throw them in the fire. It is just charcoal and paper as far as I know...

It really depends upon what is between them and the cold. For example, light gloves, they won't last as long as they will in heavy gloves.

We have a couple of them and they do work quite well but we prefer the other hand warmers as they are more flexible.

Another thing we do many times when cutting wood in winter is take an extra pair of gloves. Then we put a pair of these in the extra gloves and then wrap them in a couple old towels. Of course we take the little soapstone blocks off the stove and they are hot! When hands get cold or even if gloves get wet, then just put on that extra pair of gloves and the heat is wonderful!!!

Another little hint. ThermaCare. They have a couple sizes (buy in most drug stores) but for us the best is the back warmer. Especially if it is real cold or if sitting still, like in a deer blind. Put that on in the morning and it will still be giving heat 12 hours later. Really helps you to keep warm.

My father had the Coleman version when I was a child. I think they used butane. He would light it, put a flannel bag on it and it would kept my pockets warm.

The hand warmers work but you need to open the package an hour before you need them to get em activated and warm. Taking them ( warmers) out of the gloves and shaking them periodically helps out imo.

Keeping your hands off the metal railing helps alot too. Hard to do 30' up, I know.

I was at dicks last night grabbing some ammo, they had "grabber" brand hand warmers on sale there. I picked up 10 packages to hold me over for now. Interesting ingredients: iron powder, water, salt, charcoal and vermiculite.

Back when I was in Boy Scouts those zippo warmers were the thing to have. I remember camping in January and we'd all be passing a couple around the fire to warm our hands up for a few minutes.

Now I just buy Hot Hands hand a feet warmers by the case on Amazon. The feet warmers are nice because they're thinner and are sticky on one side to stick to a liner sock. I only get about 4 hours out of them, but taking them out of my shoes for about 20 minutes normally gives me an additional 2 hours or so.

You could probably stick the foot warmers on a liner glove on the back of your hand as well, but I've never tried that.

I thought long and hard about buying a pair of those but the reviews I've read have all been bad. They just don't get warm enough. I think they are set to only about 105 degrees and at that you would barely feel any heat and that is the gripe. I'm surprised they don't make them to get warmer. I should probably add that the reviews I've read have all been from hunters and many of those were hunting in Canada. They bought thinking it would be good and allow them to sit longer. It just did not work out so I'm betting they got a lot returned.

On the other hand, the ThermaCell units for fighting skeeters can't be beaten!
