Been trying to catch up. A wood I have not seen before.

Hello everyone. I've been busy this fall trying to play catch up with my wood pile while working during the week 12 plus hours a day. Last winter really put a dent in what I had during a winter where I didn't gather much to make for it. That was 2013/14. These pics are from this afternoon of some of the stuff I've gathered this year. Some of the pics show the different varieties I've been getting. Not shown is yesterday I got some Pear. No idea how good it is but it sure is heavy. Also yesterday, the pic on the blue tarp, is also what I picked yesterday. Threw some of it on the fire today and am surprised how well it burns. I tried to include a pic up by the house shows where I move the wood under cover on the patio I built works as great shelter, but I ran out of upload for this . In two of the pics there are five pieces one showing bark side and the grain in the other. Does anyone have any idea what this is? The grain looks like Oak, smells like Oak, but the bark is like nothing I have ever seen before. The surface had this almost paper this layer that peels right off with a heavy coarse bark under that much like normal Oak. These trees were dumped by someone right in the lot I've been cutting in for years. They have been laying in the sun for about 4 years now. Total between 15-20 of them. Some of it I've throw in the fire and it burns great, long with nice coals. Maybe some sort of Oak I've never seen before? I threw in a pic of our marker where my firewood companion was buried Thanksgiving morning. I had a Golden Retriever for 12 years and took her often with me over to the woods and she would love getting out like this finally settling down and watching me til I'm done and ready to head home. Nice things about dogs, they never complain no matter what happens and are always happy to see you.

Looks like oak to me. Was it dead when you cut it?

That's what I'm thinking, some sort of Oak. I've never seen such a strange bark though. The outside this paper layer peels off leaving under it black then it goes into a dense bark about 1/4" thick. Thanks for the comments about Macy. She will always be missed. She was first dog. Sad thing for me is I didn't realize how much I loved her til she was gone. They have a way getting into your heart and now just a big hole full of lots of memories. House sure is empty without her. Here's a few pics of her.

Also here is a few pics of what I've gathered for this fall. Some of it I will use, most of it will sit a while. I've taken mostly wood that has been dead for years and a lot of it is ready now but as most of you have learned as have I, letting it sit a year or two makes a big difference and is well worth the wait.

What a great pic of Macy under that blanket! That pic will be around forever I'll bet. When we had to let go of our 2nd husky... we both swore we would never, ever go thru that again. We were total messes for a week. We kept that no new pup attitude going for a while... then, about 6 months later, my wife saw an ad in the paper for some pups and we thought we'd just go for a ride and just check them out... ... omg, fell in love with 4 white puff balls with black eyes and nose... met Giz... and she's been the best "pet" experience we've ever had.


When some time has passed Andy, maybe there's a pup waiting for your family too. Good luck...

 

Our Golden was the best dog in the world. He raised two boys to manhood and will never be forgotten. He was totally blind for the last three years of his life, but ran the show on 3.5 acres of woods here. I could throw a rock in the river and he would go under water and get that rock. Not other rocks but that rock. He had more heart than any other dog I've ever seen. Kind of looks like a mix of wood there, oak to walnut to elm.

 

Sorry to hear about Macy. Take solace in knowing that you gave the animal the best life you could, and she paid you back with boundless unconditional love.

Are you sure it's not Shagbark Hickory? The way you describe the bark peeling off sure sounds like it.

 

The way the bark was peeling off in that last pic it makes me think of the standing dead elm that I've been cutting.

Have several pets out by the garden with a view of the mountains.
Good memories of them all.

 

I was thinking white oak too. Sorry to hear about your bud, I lost two a year apart, I got both of them from the same litter and they we're my best companions for 13 years, I did rescue another dog and I love her as much as the other two even if she's a bit more high maintenance.

 

Welcome back Andy. Sorry to hear about Macy, got to be tough, I love my dogs more than most of my family. We rescued our first dog ON Thanksgiving. Keep on keeping on!

Sorry to hear about Macy, I'm about to have to put my turbo down. She's been the best mutt/stray/saved girl anyone could ask for. I thought I saw red oak and hickory in pic 2 and top piece on the tarp.

 

Thanks for all the comments guys on Macy. I didn't mean to turn this into a dog memorial of remembrance, but has turned into a nice blessing. I was taking some pics with my new phone of all the different types of wood I came into this year and saw her buried there in front of the rose bushes I planted years ago, one for each of my kids-different colors, well I started thinking about her again. She passed away little over a month ago and this is where we buried her ashes with all the kids home Thanksgiving morning. I had no idea how much a dog can fill your home with life. God really did something special when he created these. Now at the bakery I have two feral cats show up so I've been feeding them and trying to befriend them. The one I can pet now and the other is much older and more timid but I have fed her from my hand. Beautiful little animals, but not like dogs. I have a bowl out there to fed them and I look one day and there is this little dog looking the food. I tried to coax him/her to me but it was too scared and wouldn't let me close. It looked lost and scared, my guess is under a year old. I rescued a Guinea Pig years ago someone left near the bakery. That was our first pet when the kids were little. Cool little pet. It would follow me around the yard as I worked. I think it was afraid to lose me. Again, still not the same as a dog.

Ok, the splits. Like a said the pics with the five pieces I think are some sort of Oak. Some of you say White Oak. I've several times White Oak but not with bark like this. Maybe a different species of White Oak cause it sure smells like Oak. What has thrown me is in the outer most layer of bark it looks like how a Cherry would wrap itself around horizontally. The first pic is some sort of Cherry. My buddy calls it Choke Cherry. They grow about 20' tall and seem to die there in the woods. Not a lot of pieces come from them but they are there all over and when split the grain is brilliant red. I just think they are cool looking and the wood is rock hard. The next pic is Shagbark Hickory followed by Black Walnut then White Ash. On the blue tarp is some American Elm I cleaned up for a neighbor of my dad's that came down in the wind storm this past week. I'm burning some of that now. Wow does that burn hot I had no idea Elm burned this good and gave such great coals. I loaded the fire this morning at 4 in the morning and got home at 7 in the eve. There were still enough coals to start another fire without kindling. I called my dad up and told him if that tree comes down I'll take the whole thing. You all have no idea how much Elm I've passed over in the years past because I didn't want to deal with it. From now on I'll take it.

The pics with 5 pieces. Bark side and grain side. That's the one I've never seen before. Looks and smells like Oak so I'm assuming it is. That bark is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Over in the woods I can peel it off like a sheet of paper out of a notebook.
