I ran the splitter through some smaller rounds today, let the camera run for roughly 9 minutes of it. I'll do another when I finish off the pile in vertical mode.

Splitter works pretty good either way!

Swig to splittin' ratio seems a bit low... haha! Only 1 swig for 9min of splitting??? :p

    Nice splitter though ;)

    Nice vid and nice music!

The one thing I do different is, I always stop the stroke before it goes all the way back. By the time you throw the splits, hit the stick and stop the wedge, then grab wood. Would save 4-5 seconds on every cycle.

You also lose time by obsessing over that too. I found myself spending more time trying to save time than actually splitting. You'll notice that most of the time I have the wedge the moving, not letting it retract all the way. And then if the wedge makes it all the way back, the machine is fast enough that it makes up the extra distance quite rapidly. :)

Thanks for the reply MM. Not in a position to buy one now, but it's good to know what is a fair price. Will be playing catchup on building my stash when i'm finally able to get back in the woods.

Ha. Just saw this MM. Cool. I'm going to pull the plug sooner or later and buy a splitter. Getting ready to get the "What splitter thread......" fired up. LOFL

Most horizontal splitters sit lower than that. Is up on ramps or such? That is a nice height!

    That's because it's a horizontal/vertical unit. No ramps. ;)

I keep fantasizing about switching it to a horz. Only unit and welding a lift to it tho. It would be interesting to see if I can make the sideways workflow happen as it would be a wedge on ram machine instead of the typical wedge on beam you would normally find on a horizontal unit.

    I agree.

If the wood splits readily, you only need to move the wedge a few inches.

I agreed with Dexter day above. But you are right too. One needs to know when to use the auto return and when not to.

"Most horizontal splitters sit lower than that. Is up on ramps or such? That is a nice height!" I goofed! What I meant to say:

Most horizontal/vertical splitters when in horizontal mode sit lower than that. Is up on ramps or such? That is a nice height!

Thanks for the response. Your H/V splitter is an exception vs the ones I normally see.

You will notice that the times I have allowed the wedge to fully retract, I am usually actively doing something else. Ejecting the splits, grabbing the next round, scratching my azz, something productive. :)

Dex might be right as far as I may have missed a few opportunities to cancel the return between rounds but it's minimal time lost for sure. My wood wasn't cut as uniform as I wood have liked either at that point, and I get into the habit of retracting fully to prepare for the unknown length.
