A storm is heading in tomorrow - up to 12" of snow possible. Had about 1/2 cord still in the woods and pile of big pine rounds to split. Hit the woods at 7am and hauled out the 1/2 cord of ash and red maple with a wheel barrow - the recent thaw with rain left the woods a muddy mess and couldn't drive in. Got everything back, split, and stack. Cleaned up the area - and......DONE! Been cutting since end of September - a little here and there - no heroic stretches. Feels great to have everything done for the year. Cleaned and serviced the splitter and all my saws - all put away and unless a lucky score comes in (or the snow melts fast and the woods opens up), likely done cutting for a while. Happy with this years haul. Finally hit some oak - a little over 3 of the pallets are all red oak. Three pallets are white ash. One pallet of white birch. The last 3 pallets of hardwood are mainly red maple, with a bit of yellow and black birch. Two pallets of white pine are on the left of the main stacks - shown in one pic (with a half pallet of the nasty pine splits). The pine is set aside for the (hopefully) new wood stove going in the upstairs of my barn where I've been building a wood working shop (engine shop downstairs of barn) - if that doesn't happen, most will be for fall/spring burns. Also a pic of all the rounds from the tops - ended up with an 8' x 4.5' row and the remainder is the small row in front. Ran out of rubber roofing to cover the last 4 pallets - I only have enough to cover 41 pallets - so these will sit naked till next fall. This completes the 2018/2019 wood stash - I always shoot for 4 years ahead and try to replace what I bring in the barn each fall (about 5 cord) - I think I was able to get a little more this year and hopefully I'll be able to get a little more if the weather cooperates. Long day - time to grab a beer and relax - until the snow tomorrow.......! Cheers!
That's some nice btu's you have there, with a four year season time you'll be sitting on some prime firewood.
Especially the oak - 4 years is awesome - I leave a lot of big square splits - they take some serious time to dry well, but dang they burn for a long time! Cheers!
AWESOME! A great variety of BTUs Knowing the work & man hours you put into it, makes it even more impressive . Even have a nice neat stack of uglies Each pallet a 1/2 cord ( ± ) ? Hope you can see it from the house, s0 you can look at it every day & smile Great job!
In the third picture, second stack, 4th row from the bottom, right in the centre. That piece of wood looks a little too far tilted to the left NH? Those are some beauty stacks of wood for sure.
So true - amazing how much weight they lose and always feels funny to grab those big ones and feel the difference from when they were stacked. Thanks Locust Post! BogyDave - thanks - each pallet is close to 1/2 cord - I stack to a little over 5' - must be a little less than 1/2 cord, but not by a lot. Can't see them well from the house, but I spend most of the daylight hours outside or in the barn - and I can see them from there! Seemed to take longer than usual this year to get the trees dropped to stacked - but I think it was because the bulk of the trees were small diameter - for example, most of the ash were probably 8-10" diameter and 50-60' tall - takes a lot of those to start adding up - probably 7 or 8 I'd guess to get a cord. Nicer to drop some big trees and get the job done faster! Loon - I fixed that split - thanks for catching that mistake! Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!
Beautiful stacks NH! I'm a big fan of that nice straight geometry!! Looks like ya got the Fort Knox of wood! So you don't include the round pieces in there? You move those around with a forklift?
Thanks Shawn - No rounds (well, maybe a few, but hardly any) - I set the rounds aside and stack in single rows. Forklift would be nice! Stuck with my back instead! Cheers!
Ha! I must say, once these are stacked, I get so used to them over the years, that it is a little hard to break them down! Cheers!
Wow! Those are very impressive stacks for sure. Nice job. I like your selection of wood too. Nice to have a little of everything.
