Hi NY, Is this his first stove/replacement ? what type of chimney set up ? main heat source or just supplement/back up ? house size or room size for the install ? open floor plan ? need some more info
His house is 2500 sq ft . 1st stove. He wants to do a thru the wall and up. Wants to put it in the basement and his steps are right there to the upstairs rooms. He also wants to make holes in the ceilings in the basement so the heat goes up. The basement is more of a playroom for his kids. It's about 40x20
That's similar to my setup NY, I put a hold through the ceiling but I had a fire damper installed to make it legal and up to code. With the hole and the stairway I get real good air flow and good heat distribution. I guess it depends on how much they want to spend, I'm obviously partial to the Woodstocks and I loved my Blaze King, also like the PE Summit, if I was on a budget I would consider the big Englander.
Are there regulations to have an EPA certification ? Catalytic or Non cat ? 2500 sq ft. Big stove, lots of BTUs ! Look at 39,000 BTUs & above Preferable one that has a dealer near you. There are 3 but they are asking about $6500 for a complete set up. His neighbor is a chimney guy and told him he can get everything online for about $4000 so he's looking to save and his neighbor is gonna put it in for him
Interesting...I suppose if thats what the going prices are he's got to shop around. Has he got enough wood for the winter? I would advocate for the woodstock IS for 2500 sq ft but I don't think he could get his hands on one until mid January.

In the first place, we've read over and over and over about people doing this and then can not get the heat upstairs where they want it. Yes, heat rises but it is still difficult to get enough heat up that stairway. Most folks end up doing something different so I would warn him ahead of time on this. One of the other problems is getting draft. It seems it would be no problem but it certainly can be in a basement install. Making holes in the ceilings in that basement is BAD. In fact, he could negate his house insurance and should the worst happen, he would get nothing from the insurance because no code in the US would allow that. Yes, it used to be done and I grew up in a home where we had registers. Knowing what I do now, no way would I want that. If a fire happened, those registers would act like a huge chimney drawing the flames right upstairs. Good on you for offering help on the firewood and educating him .
