I recently checked some Ash and Locust that was split and piled, not stacked about 16 months ago. It MM'd at 19%, if I remember correctly. Today I split a Locust and a Red Oak to check the MM level. The difference between the splits is the Ash/Locust check was done on wood cut more recently and not stacked, vs the Locust/Red Oak that was CSS 3 years ago and covered under a tarp for 2 years, though it was not covered for the 6 months prior to today. That particular part of the stack was the end of a row that was left untarped so I could reset the tarp starting with the full row that followed it. Regardless, both MM'd at 19%. Guessing that is the best I can expect given the local climate. It does just fine at 19%.
Piles ain't for me either P. Just a reflection of responsibilities and priorities colliding. Those piles will be palletized soon.
Myway, I usually get my Ash to mm at about 18-21% or so after being c/s/s for one year outside. I use to cover on the top only with plastic, this past year I did not. I put a moisture meter to some Red Oak that I bought split as part of a load of Ash, Maple, and some Red Oak. The Oak came in at anywhere from 25-32 %. Luckily there was not a lot of Oak and I am not depending on it. I will just sift it out and stack it when I get to it. I have a four foot high stack of it criss crossed in the basement right now instead of putting it in the boiler. It will be used to stack some Ash against it.
