I am putting a Jotul Castine inside a rumford masonry fireplace. There is a room on the other side of the fireplace with plaster wall directly backing the fireplace. The way the rum ford slopes, there are only about 5 or 6 inches from the wall to the back of the stove. The chimney connector will be only an inch or so from the brick. Currently its a single wall, and it is this close. 1. Do I need the rear heat shield in this situation? 2. Do I need to switch to double wall connector pipe?
No, you should be fine without the heat shield if I am reading this correctly. The heat shield is for combustible clearances. You fireplace is not a combustible.
I am worried about the combustibles on the other side of the fireplace. When woodstock warned me I couldn't put one of their stoves on my hearth because the wood floor under the bluestone hearth would be at risk, I started worrying about heat transfer. Just want to make sure I'm not transferring heat to the wall behind the fireplace.
Dude, it was built to have an open flame in the fireplace. That gets a little warmer than the azz end of your stove.
That's what I figured, but the guy who installed the first stove put a rear heat shield on it... And then what's the deal with those stoves, like woodstocks', that are not ember protection only for the hearth? If I can build an open fire on my hearth, then why can't I put a Woodstock Keystone on it without having to add all this R-value protection?
