Went into town today and seen this. Seems like alot of cash? anyone know how much these caged totes hold?
Some one on Craigslist here gave away 1 of those heavy gauge wire bins a couple weeks back.Seen the ad but time I got finished with other work it was already gone. Looked to be about 4 feet square,maybe 3 feet tall. Wouldn't mind having one for my chunks/uglies/milling scrap sometime.
A hundred and seventy-nine bucks? That's outrageous, even if you get the cage with it. Maybe it's from the very rare platinum tree.
That'a how I store my wood... If they are 45"x48"x 48" tall. . they hold just shy of 1/2 a cord( .42-.45). depending on how high its stacked. ( and that is considering 100% wood space volume, not air space) So realistically they are closer to 1/3 of a cord.
Those look 4 x 4 by 2.5 to me....and the splits appear to be slightly over a foot long. I'd guess slightly less than a face cord. If stored in those, how the blazes do you get the wood out of them? Would drive me crazy. Wood is ridiculously expensive here (I too am in Loon's neighborhood)...priced it this summer with about a half dozen suppliers....all are at least 100/face cord. But the above price is crazy...paying for a lot of handling, I guess. As you can see from Loon's photo, we at last are getting some of the predicted snowfall.... Time to start cooking on the PH in earnest. So far, have baked a carrot pudding, made a chicken stew, cooked several pumpkins and squash, and made a squash soup......time for a good hearty beef/leek/sweet potato stew.
I season my wood on plastic pallets, then use a couple of those cages to move up to the house with the tractor at the end of the summer and I have lids for them that keep the rain/snow/ice off the wood. It makes for easy transport to the house and storage. its also easy to separate different types of wood. Those cages go for 50 bucks around here so 130ish for 4/10 of a cord is about the going price from a retailer... not saying its ridiculous, but...everything is going up cost wise, another month around here and a cord will be 300ish.
I would say that's about a third of a cord. I see landscapers up near Chicago selling the same size cage full of wood for 250.00 people pay that with out blinking an eye.pretty sad.
That's a pretty darn good ideal. Still cheaper than by the grocery store/ gas station bundles per cord. But for a part timer or a smaller user that would be very convenient. We have a guy down here that uses a skid with sides built on it, and its shrink wrapped. He'll load you, and you pay a $10 deposit fee for the skid. Really a great way to do it, less handling as long as you have the equipment to move it.
before having a tractor, Id never think about using a tall sided crate like that. I got a few from work and trashed the plastic tote that was inside them. used one for kindling and one for moving wood up to the house. Over the years I've collected 8 or 9 of them and it makes it great to stack them in, cover them in the wet/cold months and then move it up to the house. easy to separated different species off wood. Right now I have two full of pin oak, two full of red oak, three of maple, one of wild cherry and one of cherry up by the house. the one I use I actually use to moved wood to the house, I cut the top layer off to make it easier to bend down and unload.
