Went to Ely a couple weekends ago and got an axe for my wife, I think it was a pretty good trade.... All jokes aside. In college I broke the made in China camp hatchet that my wife had. I promised to replace it and the years passed by... Finally I had a little jingle in my pocket and called up a few outfitters until I found one who had a Small Forest Axe in stock. She seems to like it and we've had a few lessons on proper useage. Mainly 'this is an ax, this is a maul, this is what you use them for...'
I still have a hard time trying to tell the misses how to tell the difference between seasoned and unseasoned wood.
She managed to nick her finger with it this morning when splitting kindling. Nothing too serious. Just a reminder that it is sharp! After stemming the flow I asked her to show me what happened and then a little edjumacation hopefully will prevent a repeat performance.
Beautiful tool. Get a sharpening stone from Amazon for 10 dollars.and wet sharpen. That steel takes and holds an edge to shave with.
With a shorter axe, be careful if you miss. That's an awfully sharp edge to strike your leg with. A longer axe is safer in that way. Swedish steel is some of the best.
Yes is does have a shorter handle. So far she mainly uses it for making kindling. Usually this is done with short swings onto a chopping block while kneeling.
