So worked most the afternoon getting wood out of the woods. It was a gorgeous day to be out. First order of the day was to get a bunch of stuff that was dead standing down in one section and split up. I took a truck load and then we took a trailer load to dads shop. There is probably still a truck load left.
Next order was felling some trees. Didn't take as many pics as usual but we hauled 4+ trailer loads out of the woods. Pics are of some oak we cut up and the last trailer load of the day.
Final results of the wood we hauled out. The big stack is three rows deep and all is pretty much fresh cut. The small row is all dead standing stuff that we picked up here and there along the way.
Yeah it was. We are trying to be more proactive and take trees down that are rotting from the base instead of leaving them to fall. That maple was really bad about 24" up and was hollow.

Yeah you gotta get that standing dead maple - it rots from the top down pretty quickly. Nice work man. Should keep you keep you warm and busy!
Just about all of it was ready to burn per the moisture meter. The stuff for dads shop will probably set a few weeks before he starts burning it and the stuff I took will be stacked as back up wood if this winter is bad enough that I use my alloted wood up.
On a positive note I may not use as much wood as usual now that I insulated the attic. I know i sound like a broken record but it is crazy how much better the house is holding heat. I loaded my stove this morning at 6 am with pine and buckeye when it was in the teens and just got home and it is 27 outside. The house was 67 degrees and the blower was still kicking on and off on the stove. And there were plenty of coals for a reload. In less than a minute the wood caught and less than ten minutes later I am shutting the stove down. I am pretty happy with 14 hours on that load with those results . Since the house was a bit cool I threw in some oak and pine for overnight.
Nice day to be working in the woods Good temps & a nice sunny day. Looks like you got that maple just in time. The center will get punky fast if it gets wet . When do you plan to get it split & stacked ? Nice to get dry , ready to burn wood. Must have got a couple cord out, some of those rounds look big & heavy good days work !
The temps were great to work in that's for sure and the sun felt good when it hit you. Some of the areas we were working in where in a hollow where the sun doesn't hit it and the ground stayed frozen and the temps never really got much out of the mid twenties. We will probably start splitting when we can't get in the woods anymore. Right now we have been trying to cut and haul everything out that we can while we can get back into some of these places. There is no way we will get everything out that we need to before the weather turns. Once the weather gets bad we have about 20 big oaks that need to come down in the pasture since they are starting to choke the grass out and we will be able to work on them all winter. Since it is pretty flat up top.
Yea I did similar, got the wood home, then started splitting The 20 oaks will be green. ? How long you have to season it there. "Big Oaks" will require some pictures , yes ?
yes, big oak takes more time to dry out than smaller oaks, and the lower you get down in the tree close to the stump takes years. The 6-8' feet of the pin oak i took down 2 1/2 years ago is still wet and was split when it was cut down. very dense, wet wood
Looks good Certified106. And all those oaks sound like fun this winter. Will you drop them and leave em til dry ground or slide on/plow thru the snow to get them out?
