22 at the moment, we're still burning the same combo, Hemlock & White Pine.....we'll be done with what we have inside tomorrow so we'll switch to some dead Elm and some deader Elm with Maple. After we get done with the above, we'll switch over to the Cherry, saving the Ironwood,Beech and the Sugar Maple for the 20-30 below chit. We decided to hold back .61 of a cord of Hemlock we had scheduled to burn this year for the spring of 2015 or warmer weather this winter.
26. Burning full out hard maple. Don't feel like getting into the mixed lumber scrap bin. Been burning straight beech for many years. First year in a long time any thing else. Hard maple hands down kicks beech in the ash.
This new IS is a dream! We are going down to around 28 tonight, 32 right now. Ran a 12 hr load this morning, reloaded at 5:30 with 3 splits. Before bed I'll reload for the overnight, I'll get another 12 easy. A comfy 73 indoors
Great to hear IS. Nothing like a good wood burning appliance. I really liked my Pacific Energy Super 27 wood stove. (Still have it for back up, and miss being able to see the fire through the glass door. ) But I really like my gasification boiler. Starting my fourth season with it. Now cutting all my wood supply off the land and heating my entire home and garage with it is awesome.
32 now burning oak and ash chunks, easy to heat the house with twenties and thirties, the teens and single digits that's a little bit different story
I remember trying to get a whole night of sleep on one full load of wood in the boiler several nights last winter. Barely getting through 7 hours of sleeping and still having a hot bed of coals the next morning. I know we all remember how cold it was some days last winter. This was some of the coldest days in my area. I know on some of those days I had -29 on my back porch. Currently 30 with a low of 25 tonight. Got home late from work tonight so it's only been fired up for about an hour and a half now. Burning a load of ash and mystery wood that has it nice and toasty in the basement now..
28º burning down a big pile of silver maple coals....mostly ash in the ready for tonight, forecast 18º. Got the saws and gas in the bed of the truck, going after a load of cherry tomorrow....plan is to see the sun just rising when I cut my wedge.
Let me start off by saying Buckeye is complete junk wood, it is lighter and has less btu's than pine! I only got 10 hours out of last nights load and very few coals which I am sure is from the 2 splits of oak. Regardless the house is 70 degrees this morning and it is currently 16 degrees outside. I'm pretty happy with 10 hours on junk wood and in these temps never could have done that last year. Reloaded with Buckeye and Pine.
Now that is dam cold. I hope we do not see anything colder than we had last year. I don't mind getting some good cold nights though. I will take -35 below a good few nights. Hopefully kill off some of the nasty bugs we don't want living around here! I looked back at November of last year. This week we seem to be averaging about 10degrees colder than we were last year at this time. Right now it is 21º on my back porch. I went through about 3/4 of a load of Ash with some Pine mixed in. I put the wood in the boiler at about 08:30 last night and had a hot bed of coals this morning at 6am. I just reloaded with Pine and Spruce. I am going to try and burn up the fast burning stuff on my days off and save the Ash and Maple for the real cold temps.
23 the day before.. used my first oak a mix of red and white. 30ish today... trying to use up the last of the silver maple I have. Lots of maple, some cherry and very little ash.
I'm glad you mentioned that. Outdoor boilers aren't even an option for me (not legal in my area), but I always thought if I did have one I would really miss being able to to stare at the flames and be mesmerized. Clearly the tradeoff is you get some killer heat!
Killer heat, all even temperatures throughout house and garage with control of thermostats. My boiler is not an outdoor boiler. I have an indoor wood gasification boiler. It can heat in the mid to high 80s for efficiency. Right up there with an efficient oil boiler. Most old style outdoor wood boilers are lucky if they get 50-60% efficiency.
Oops, my bad! Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, even heat throughout the house is def something I don't get with my insert! Though in fairness, I do like the bedroom nice and cold when I sleep!
