Cold moved in yesterday and now the people are getting busy cutting, splitting and hauling around here. This is the time of year you should cut your winter wood isn't it ? Saw a guy yesterday with a big trailer full of fresh slabs, cut to stove size, he looked real proud. By this time next month the fire dept will be doing double duty with chimney fires. I guess they have to have something to do too.
Might be cutting, splitting and storing for next year or year after. Dormancy makes it the best time to fell, split and store. (I'm all about the optimism )
I have seen that around here a lot more in the past couple days and I know where your coming from cause I don't think most of it is future BTU's
I I agree. The same thing around here. Seen dump trucks full of split wood most likely on a delivery to a customers house. Poor customers don't know what they are in for when they put it in their fireplace
Dont agree with the 'poor customers'. Sorry NY. They are culpable too. If you are going to burn wood in your home, at least do the bloody research to make sure you are safe and check you are getting what you have paid good money for.
Yea saw my neighbor out this weekend finally filling his woodrack with fresh splits. He will burn it this year, probably thinks I'm nuts having about 5 cords stacked and no stove.
My first year I got ripped off, the second year too. Now I'm not so much the city slicker anymore. I'm proud to say I'm a fully blown Wood Hoarder. Wood needs to sit 3 years here.
Pretty sure we have this conversation every year. Welcome aboard Paula. Great to have yet another member from the great state of UKlahoma. j/k Problem here is that you can do all the research you want, but if you rely on others for your firewood, you'll likely get unseasoned. LOTS of folks in my area burn, and I rarely see anyone prepping the year prior, let alone 2-3-4 years out. It's more like, get the wood somewhere between August and November, then start burning. The state will also help those in need of heating assistance, but I don't know if they have the foresight to provide that a year in advance. Doubt it. The problem runs very deep. Agreed that customers should be more aware.
Same thing here, guys and gals. My stubborn cousin is one prime example......he drag races and builds race cars all summer and last week he just started cutting and splitting his wood for THIS WINTER......ugh. OWB to boot. Wish people would get with it and let their wood season, we'd ALL benefit from it.
On the flip side, people see me cutting, hauling, splitting and stacking year round. They have no idea I'm 5 years ahead on my firewood stash......lmao....
I'm cutting 3-4 days per month year round in my spare time,I only stay outta the woods when temps are below 0,above 90,deep snow or thunderstorms/strong winds.Plus 3-4 times yearly my tree service contact dumps a big load in my backyard here in town. So I'm pretty well stocked, between 4 & 5 years ahead right now ,even with burning a lot last winter, most of it was in January 2014 alone.
My elderly neighbour Brenda can remember open fires with household coal (Im in NW England in a terraced house) and thinks its great that we have a real fire - even if its wood "its not as good Paula". Shes brings my husband coffee when he is outside splitting and stacking and has a good old chat. Bless her, shes lovely. Everyone else thinks we are certifiable that we go to all this trouble, but we love it (We get our wood from my job as a habitat/woodland management science tutor, so all freebies)
I only go in the woods the third Tues. of every other month during every fourth leap year. Guess I should order mine. Seriously though, I don't like going in the woods when it's tick high noon, which is usually between May- June. If there's too much snow, it's a no-go. The heat still doesn't bother me a ton......I just slow down a bit, and drink a lot of water.
I'm thinkin' Brenda has the hots for your hubby. Better keep an eye on her! Excuse my ignorance, but what's a "terraced" house?
She has the hots since he built and rendered a wall between out properties. He is her hero. She doesnt have to replace any fences again A terraced house is a house within a row of houses, Not sure how to post a pic but common throughout the UK.
I call those folks , "water boilers" Amazing the BTUs wasted to boil the water out of the wood so it will burn. See it every year at the cutting area. Cutting birch to burn next week. Start Talking about seasoning wood, they laugh, I tell them I have the new EPA, catalytic stove, & I have to have dry wood. They shake their head like they're sorry &/or I'm dumb for having the stove. Few come back, found out it was real work getting wood where you can't drive your truck next to it. Did meet one guy cutting the dead spruce, real dry ready to burn stuff. So there are others out there that understand the principles of fire & wood burning efficiency .
My son in law did not have any dry wood for his shop in the first cold spell we had here, too many hobbies I think.
Aha. Well, if he built a fence for us, he'd be my hero too. I however, would not have the hots for him....no matter what.
