I've been beating this around for quite some time so today I did it.
I put Grandmas baffle in a long while ago and it was only 1/4" (it's what I had at the time) It served the stove well and helped emensly with more heat and longer burns.
Over the years the plate warped and it was a royal pain in the a$$ to clean the ash behind it, so I got a idea one dayo_O…. I make the plate thicker, longer to slow the burn down even more, and a diverter out of angle to push more heat to the sides and not up to the flue. Will it work???…. It should. I also cut some spiffy corners out so I can knock out the ash from behind the plate…. If all goes well,…. This should increase my heat and use less wood, (in theory)… I still have plenty of space (sq in ) for even flow to the flue so I guess it all will come down to the test this winter:popcorn:…..

Looks good I have another piece of that 3/4 inch plate but would hate to see the shipping cost.

That piece I put in new is 3/8", I'll get another 20+ years out of that! I have quite a bit of plate lying around now, I almost used a piece of 1/2" but I think the 3/8 will be fine:).

Looks good Dave! I can see why you put it off for some time, it was a project.
Looks like this season will be better knowing the new piece is installed and in good order.

I know what you mean Dave, we can count how close the old man (winter) is on one hand now.

So like a good project to have behind you. I don't know how you'll objectivly measure your results with condition always changing. I did hear that there no conditions forming up to allow another polar vortex this winter.
The only way I know to predict winter weather is to get up each morning, look out the window, that's your winter weather.

Haven't fired it off yet, but I may this week if it gets as cold as they are saying… I'll keep you posted.

Update for all you who either added or considering the baffle, I fired her off last night for the first time this year. "As" I expected I got a little burb back in the house, "not enough heat to cause the draw yet" After my stack temp got up over 200* it started heating like a dream!!! :D Much more heat going to the surface of the stove and when I opened the doors, it fired heat right in the room!!:banana:… It's still early in the experiment but it's looking up!:drunk:

Your upturned angle is kind of what I meant but turned down instead. Kinda to roll the smoke around.

I understood, My thought there was to try and stop as much flame going to the flue as possible "longer burn" My only concern with the angle turned the other way would be a burb in the smoke. As it is, I'm getting a small amount on light off with this configuration. This baffle is longer and has the angle so I think I'm "just" pushing the limits of the air box area, Mathematically it has the correct area but I would'nt go any bigger with this one. After about an hour, the old girl was "cranking" out heat!:D

Ok Guy's, "UPDATE"! As you all know I made this baffle a bit longer and added the angle… Well The pro and cons are on the table now! I've burned a few good fires now and I have been cold iron for a few days and did my usual light offs tonight after work a bit ago. "the cons" I never used to get a "burp" of smoke in the house on initial light off, now I do o_O… I'm going to have to either live with it or trim it back about an inch… "the Pros" "ONCE" its fired and burning, "no problems what so ever" even opening the door to re-load. and most of all it is KICKING A$$ with heat!!! I think for now I'm going to live with the con and figure out a method to at least not get that initial burst of smoke in the room. My thoughts here are it was a 90% success so I'm happy:cool:.

I've noticed a slight burp it mine as well. Not all the time and no real consistent factor that I've noticed other than on warmer days. I agree with kicking heat though. Lit her off around 12:15 last night and did not reload until about 1 this afternoon and still had hot coals for a relight. Used to be an 8 hour deal.

Not real familiar with any others but does yours have a flap in the front at the top. Seems like as long as I don't leave this up after loading it doesn't burp.

No, Once mine is up to temp, I don't get any burp because of the heat flow. It's only on initial light off and only until the flue temps get hotter. Once I'm above 200* I don't seem to get it.
