He said he has a short load of logs that he can give me tomorrow, would I like it? 1/2 a truck or so. What am I supposed to say, "if you want to back your truck down my driveway and unload it has to be full"?

I got the leaves out of the way and the stringers set up. Time to go get some fresh mix.

As usual I will probably not be at home when he delivers because I will be at the soccer field.

Oh no you don't. Never bring a short load......It's a full load or nothing, mister.
If you can get it processed quickly, I wouldn't worry about the "stringers". If it may take a while, I think I'd beef up the ones in back.......they look a little wimpy.
    So,

Stringers are so I can slide/roll the wood into the driveway for cutting. Doing that much on cutting on the lawn is pretty detrimental to it. Dust/chip/bark cleanup is much easier when done on the driveway

And I found this in when I returned from my daughters soccer game (they lost). Not a bad load at all, 14 pieces. Estimate it to be 2.5 cords. White oak, red oak, ash and a lowly piece of sycamore. First time I've ever had sycamore.

    IMGP9791.JPG

First log on the cutting deck is red oak, 14' long, 21", 2nd is ash 24" at the but side, gets a bit knotty, it might be a pita to split.

I don't know how he split the log length pieces although he did say that he was doing that in order to give the wood away.

Great stuff.Grab all you can find room for.

Some years ago when I split some 6' & 10' White Oak & Western Red Cedar ( Cedar was a 80 yr old phone pole Qwest left for me in backyard) for rail fencing/posts I used sledge/wedges & a couple heavy wooden "gluts" just leapfrogging them down the length....

Not easy & takes some patience but can be done if you don't try to do too much at once...

Paul, that is great. I wouldn't worry too much about that ash being hard to split.

I got 2/5 of it cut up this afternoon. I think the pre-split pieces were a failed tree, there wasn't a mechanical mark on any of it and the pieces were cut to separate lengths. It split apart standing. My 029 Farm Boss with a 20" bar definitely isn't up to the task of 24"+ logs. Spent forever cutting them up with the nose burried. I need to get a bigger bar with skip chain or a bigger saw all together.

Might have some hickory that I mistook for for oak at first. It does grow here but it isn't that common. I've never received any hickory logs before.

Yes, he always lays it out flat on my metal. This time I left him a note asking for the biggest ugly logs on the 6x's so I wouldnt have to mess with rolling them and he complied. Only complaint I have is no cherry, boo-hoo, a friend of mine has a resturant with smoker and I can convert the cherry into a golden beer mug when I have a supply.

That be Shagbark alright.... You're in for a a treat.Same intense heat (sometimes a little more) as White Oak,but dries in half the time - 12 to 18 months once split/stacked & in a spot with sun/wind.

What's in the glass? I can't quite make it out...

If you haven't done a muffler mod on that 290 you should think about it. Mine will pull 20", full comp, rs chain while buried quite well now. Not like it keeps up with the 038 mag or anything, but it is extremely noticible in performance, sounds sweet, and was free. Just a thought, although I would never endorse NOT getting a new bigger saw if you have the funds. Either way the 290 is sorely in need of an mm.
