Wood splitter PM

Preventative maintenance time. Checked & tightened hose fitting & hose clamps.
Checked tightened the bolts. found a few loose.
Changed engin oil, they don't make it simple, oil plug
is over the mounting plate. Made a tin foil trough
to re direct the oil to the can.
Of course it's metric pipe, & I don't have one to put in
to extend the drain out a few inches.
5/30 synthetic, I change every 2 years. (18 - 20 cord)
Ready for next year :


Checked /greased the ATV trailer bearings, one was lose. both needed some grease.
Used year round , wintertime to haul wood to the house.
Needs some TLC on the wood, maybe a paint job this winter :

 

That's a great post on equipment maintenance Dave. I'm the same, rainy days end up being 'honey do list' and general maintenance days. Time in the garage is welcomed time, speaking of which, I need to tidy that too.

 

Gotta wonder who thought that drain location was a good idea

The drain plug on my trucks transmission is directly above the exhaust pipe. If I ever wanna change the oil, I'm gonna have to put up with the smell of burning gear oil right under me for a few weeks afterwards

 

Check the hydraulic filter, mine was loose and leaking.

 

I changed the oil on my splitter a few months ago, what a pain. i have been meaning to purchase an extension like this

Same here. A little brakleen fixes it right up.

 

Well I had a good laugh this morning. When I opened your first picture, the one showing the oil draining, at first glance it looks like the oil is draining directly onto the garage floor! I thought wow, Dave is a lot messier guy than I thought! Then I read your post and started laughing, and realized that must be a black rag on the floor.

tight , no signs of leaking.
Hyd oil looks clear, clean & in the full range.

 

One JD mower I had, had an extension on the oil drain & came with a hose to attach .
No mess, good full circle engineering .

1/3 quart of oil , & every other year I can put up with the poor "maintenance engineering".
When I see stuff like this, it shows that few mechanic become engineers.

CSO (common sense optional) College boys strike again. LOL

Great post Dave. I'm big on maintenance with my stuff as well. Rotating the tires and changing the fuel filters on my truck this weekend.

 

Good thread Dave....I've got about 5 cords on mine since last oil change and hyd. filter change but I should check the bolts and clamps, thanks

Kicking the tires ,seems to always turn up something that needs attention .
Had a loose bolt, replaced the nut that hold on the wedge with a ny-lock nut.
2nd time it was getting loose.

 

I see a light coating of oil on the tank by the fill plug/vent.
Pretty sure it's from a mist coming out the little vent hole in the plug.
not dripping.

Corrosion prevention .

 

I always have a bit around my tank plug/vent too, usually has wood dust on it by the time I'm done splitting.
