Tree ID from bark

Its a pretty big standing dead one with the bark falling off, I'd probably know from the leaves but there aren't any and no cut end yet. Thanks

 

Kinda hard to tell from that. My wild guess is pecan?

 

Turn the bark over (or get a shot of the log), are there any bug galleries on it. They can be a big clue.

 

Those are good detailed shots, but it's hard to get an idea of the scale. Red maple could look like that in extreme closeup. Are you familiar with the varieties of trees in the area? That can be the best way to identify standing dead - find another one that looks like it and has leaves.

One things for sure, it's some kind of tree and potential firewood

 

I hear that. People ask me what kind of wood I'm burning and I reply, "Must be ash trees, cause every time I throw some in, all that is left is ash!"

 

I could believe walnut.

 

I will probably make it over to that part of the woods again this weekend and see if there is another like it with leaves ? or take it down cause it will burn. I'll have to drop it on my access road so thats why I was sorta wondering to leave it for a while or keep chasing the prime deeper in, it does have me stumped by the bark and I will post more when I get there, Thanks, Todd
