My previous experience sweeping chimeys were with stoves that piped out the top, all the chimney debris fell into the firebox and we shoveled/vacuumed it out. My new insert, Englander 13I has "High-tech non-catalytic XBT ™ firebox" Do we need to uninstall the entire stove every time we sweep the flue liner? Heres a pic of the top from inside the firebox I think. I understand the tubes but what is the white plate above them? Does anyone know if the chimney debris will be on the white plate?
I don't know your stove or chimney setup, but I detatch the stovepipe at the top of the stove and a large cool whip container is the exact size, fitting perfectly inside the pipe. Reattach, and it catches everything! *Bonus...... you get to eat coolwhip!
That white plate is the baffle. It's a bit fragile, so be careful handling it. The ones for the 30 are $60 apiece. If you plan to sweep from above, that/those (there are 2 in the 30NC) need to come out or you'll likely poke a hole in it. There should be a screw holding the burn tubes in that need to be undone, then pull out the front tube to access the baffle. The flue crud should drop right into the stove. So, is this a top or back collar? I can get both of my baffles out by pulling just the front tube.
Thanks for the great info, I love cool whip too. My concern is getting to the pipe to disconnect it. I am hoping to sweep from top down, clean the c himney junk that falls into the firebox. Its an actual insert though, with little room between the top of the stove and the FP opening. Thanks!
Sorry...... wont work for an insert. Freestanding stove with access to the stovepipe. I stand by eating coolwhip though.
1. Open the door to your insert. 2. Clean out ash, etc. Trust me, do this before proceeding. 3. Look into stove/insert at the tubes/top. 4. Locate the screws holding the nearest and then middle tube to you. 5. Remove the screws (one at a time) and slide tubes (one at a time) over and drop out. 6. While removing middle tube, hold baffle board up with other hand. 7. Maneuver baffle board out. 8. Clean chimney. 9. Reverse above and you're ready to burn again.
Obviously, the title of this thread is what confuzzled me. The part where it mentions insert threw me. The obvious, obviously eludes me at times.
