So one of my friends had me come over and look at his Dutchwest 2461 a week or so ago and and I told him all the gaskets needed replaced, Back fire back needed replaced, cat needed replaced etc...... He got everything gathered up and I went over to help him with put it all back together this morning. After I got started I noticed things that were indicating an over fire condition like a warped top plate so the cat wouldn't sit properly and a few other things. I gave it a really good once over with a flashlight and found a cracked side casting. The crack was a good 14" long and I think may have been what lead to the over fire? Anyhow he is going to just buy a new stove.

He wants to keep the stove under $2000 and prefers cast iron look but I told him to keep an open mind. Anyhow his house is around 1600 sq ft and I recommended looking at the following brands.
    • Woodstock Ideal Steel
    • PE T5
    • Englander (although I think the 30 is to big and I'm not sure the NC 13 is enough)
    • Lopi
    • Drolet ( Grizzly Adam what model did you buy?)
    • Jotul

Throw me out some other names or stoves that may work for him if you have any. Thanks!

If new isn't important, a refurbished or used Woodstock Fireview would be a good choice. It is an awesome proven performer.

I did mention that one to him but when I pulled it up on my phone to show it to him he siad it was to victorian for his taste. He lives in an old cabin that he bought moved and reassembled himself. It is pretty awesome looking. He has so many trophy bucks on the walls it is like a deer museum!

JFYI, the Englanders(13 and 30) have hearth R value requirements. The 13NC, which I have, requires a R2 value on the hearth.................and IIRC, the 30NC requires a R1.5 value. If your buds hearth doesn't have that, then he's SOL with Englander unless he looks in the new stove they came out with called the "Madison". I believe it's ember protection only.

Thanks, How many square feet are you heating and do you think the stove is good enough quality to last 10+ years? I am not trying to insult those with a Drolet I am just totally unfamiliar with them and have never seen one although the great reviews on here are enough to make me recommend them.

Thanks for the info on that. I am pretty sure his hearth isn't much more than ember protection right now. It is heartstones about 1.5" thick on top of wood floors.

I certainly can appreciate your friend's point of view. The Fireview is somewhat ornate, and either it fits in your décor or it doesn't. I personally love the look, but I can see where it might not be rustic enough for this particular application.

Do you think the progress would be overkill for 1,600 sq ft?

Not at all. My house is 1550 sq ft with a cathedral ceiling in the great room and 9 ft ceiling in the rest of the house with average insulation.. I find the Progress Hybrid to be extremely controllable with very long burn times. I live in Tenn so the winter is not nearly as cold as up North, but my home is very comfortable with the stove burning at a low rate. I burn 3 year old oak and hickory and can easily get 15+ hour burns. The problem for your friend would be the price point of $2000. I think it would be very hard to find a Progress Hybrid that cheap.

Looks great with trophy bucks on the wall! Even with our knotty pine walls, it fits right in nicely.

I told him he should get the ideal steel and have them make buck heads for the side panels. That would be pretty cool

Right on Certified. He can even design his own side panels if he wants.

Certified106 , I'm agreeing with you big time on the WS IS as a choice consideration. however, after chatting with a few of the WS folks recently, they may not be able fill the order until late December. Can he hang on until then? If so, it's worth all the hype for the money of a steel stove. Even on the cheap he could get into one for sub $2k

That is a bummer on the timeline as I'm not sure he will want to wait that long. I have a list of stoves gathered up and will give it to him at church this morning.

Purchasing a quality stove is a long term investment and should not be rushed.
