Ok, so my next door neighbors dogs come over and root through my trash.....they don't just root through it, they drag it out, make a mess, that I have to keep picking up. Now, I don't have a dog for many reasons, and that's one of them. Talked to the neighbor, but to no avail......maybe they'll put up onna those electric underground fence jobbies, etc., but nothing has happened. Now, I'm the first to admit I am not an animal nut, other than to say most of them taste good to me, but I do understand that to many folks their dogs are close members of their families......I'm somewhat rural, but even so, don't feel that I should have to constantly pick up my trash.....I am hoping some of you folks have alternative ideas, other than asking nicely, which I've tried. I've considered spray painting them orange or something, but with the animal cruelty nuts around, I'd probably have picketers and go to jail.......

Check your local locale to find out what, if any, ordinance they have concerning dog control. Once you can determine what the law is, you can either attempt to educate a stupid and careless dog owner with that or call in the enforcement in the area to do it. Just like there are some people on this earth who are not qualified to be parents, the same applies for dog ownership. No use taking the frustration out on the dogs as they are pack animals doing what is instinctive to them. Remember, you can't always fix "stupid".

    Lousyweather? Maybe just lousy neighbors?
Quite a few years back someone I know used to put liquid ammonia into their trash bag before setting it out at the street to be picked up later on that day. They swore by it and said not only did it prevent the dogs but also the crows would leave the bags alone. Maybe it's worth a try?

Are you sure it is the dogs. I was sure mine were getting into my trash, then I discovered it was coons. Of course my dog messed with it once it was spilled all over, but they were not the ones overturning as I had thought. Take a picture of the dogs into it. Give the neighbor a warning, then go to animal control. They will get fined.

That is unacceptable to me. I live in more rural area than most and even out here we keep our animals contained. Do they not have a fence? And I am a certified animal nut. I wonder if peer pressure might work if the dogs causing problems with other neighbors too?

Keep a can or two of hornet/wasp spray handy. 20-30 ft.range. Shoot a few streams on the trash cans so the stench is there, then a quick squirt in their direction. It works and no permanent damage.

If dogs can get in your trash, what about any other animal. Keep your cans in the garage, shed, etc. Here you can get fined out the azz for letting animals have access to your trash.

Curbside pickup here, the town purchased containers with lids that are permanently attached, they flip back. This project was originally managed by the health dept due to the animals getting into the trash overnight at the curb. Right intentions but once the bin was full folks would then put out loose bags again. I dunno....

I had a neighbor whose dog was getting out a lot. I took it home twice after it got in my trash. He was less than enthused to have it back. I think he did not want to put any effort into fixing his in ground fence.

They gave us the same style containers here too. Worked until the Bears ripped the lid right off the hinges.................

well, seen the dogs in it.....the bears just eat the bird food.....coons will get in the trash, and when I go running out there, they all climb up the nearest tree....ole .22LR finds them just fine......don't wanna do toe .30-.30 cure on the neighbors dogs tho....might go over wrong.

Ive seen them tip over the cans.....don't have a garage......also don't have a dog.....and also hate stepping in dog dodo when I mow my lawn.....

I guess another thing you could do is as it is taking place, give them a call--"just want to let you know that your dogs are in my garbage again! I was hoping this wouldn't happen again"
At any rate, good luck. Sounds like they don't care about the whole scenario...shame that you care about offending the offenders.

    You have options

    Call the law
    Bear spray on the cans
    bear spray on the dogs
    Paintball gun
    Fence in ur trash
    Get a bigger dog
Put cinder blocks on can lids
    Motion activated noise maker

Get creative. ..have fun with it.

The problem here unfortunately is the neighbors and not the dogs. My dog doesn't leave my sight unleashed and comes running on a single come command.

I'd vote for a paintball gun, or pepper spray. I love dogs, but I also love mine enough to keep him safe in my own yard.

you know, that's a dang good idea for a product.......stinky paint ball pellets....like skunk scent or something........

thought of the exlax idea, but I don't know what bad things that might do to the animal......other than the obvious.....
