I initially judge the one as black walnut and grabbed the rest without looking too close. Now I realised that I have two different woods and the one I thought was walnut didn't have that smell when I cut into it. The second one looks like ash bark but I haven't seen it with a dark heart. Little help please?
That second one sure looks like pignut hickory bark. Must be a silver maple near by also. That leaf on it, and on the ground around it, is silver maple looking.
Probably Pignut or mockernut they are hard to distinguish from just bark - but they have no distinguishing BTU difference or smoke smell. Grab a sliver and light it blow it out and take a good sniff - save some splits for the smoker/BBQ
Yep, silver maple is the one I plan on dropping this weekend. Thanks guys. But what do you think the first one is then?
You're supposed to smell your wood - it's OK around here BW I've had before didn't smell strong either. Hickory won't really smell like hickory(mind register) until it smokes either
yeppers.....black walnut and hickory, without a doubt...... Good score! And yes Jack, you are allowed to smell your wood around here....
First one definitely looks like walnut but the second one I am not sure on. I only have shagbark hickory on my property and can say its definitely not that. Maybe pignut hickory?
The second tree seems to have a very dark heartwood. I think it is Black Walnut, just like the first one. The bark on the second tree does look like Pignut Hickory, but some smaller Black Walnuts have a similar bark.
No the second is for sure hickory - it will have varying degrees of heartwood color from reds - dark browns. It makes some beautiful cabinets too
Dude that is hickory - I will post some pics of known hickory bark and some walnut off my property in the daylight(if there is any tomorrow)
