What's your experience ? Does it leave a lot of ash ? Would it be better to mix it with some ,white ash ,silver maple, red oak ?
Like grizz said, it's a slow burner but man does it smell like a$$ outside when i burn it. Maybe it's just me but that stuff stinks comin out of the chimney . It's pretty ashy but not as bad as some others. I would at least mix it in and not burn a whole load.
I have burned a bunch of it, and never noticed a bad smell. It is like a lot of other medium-density hardwoods in terms of heat, burn time, etc.
Same here, I have burnt a good bit and some of it would gag you and sometimes not ??? It also seems to dry out really dry for me split smaller than average and I liked to mix burn it with hard stuff (mostly oak) for a choked down over night load. It will burn a little slower than you think it should given its dry weight and texture. My back don't mind the working weight of it either so I usually don't pass it up.
It burns well but takes about 2 years to get it to 18% or so. After 1 year it was still 24%. It does pop a lot and makes more ashes than a Green ash but as far as heat it is not bad wood.
I only ever had it in marginal quantities, was always burned mixed with other woods. Saying it burns like cherry is just about spot on.
Love me some Walnut... About 2 years to get the moisture down. Good burning wood for shoulder & winter day time burns. Smells awesome fresh splits, really haven't noticed any nasty smell during burning.
Not bad. I normally burn a small amount each year. Branches/tops,offcuts/scrap from milling mostly.Smells great either when machining, splitting or burning it.
black walnut likes my stove, goes in the side door without complaint or fuss, I've burned tons of it. I just dropped and bucked 13 walnut trees, have a stand of 'em that I've been thinning out....so sorry, no pics, however, would pass lie detector test
Well, seein how I know some of y'all around here, and in an attempt to deflect criticism directed at my behavior here at fhc, you know, trying to avoid demerits and stuff, I dragged myself outside and took a pick of the walnut pile, cuz I KNOW some of you just wouldn't buy it without pics, and then I walked over close to the back porch and snapped a photo of the 2+- cord on there
I think it can dry faster than two years. I burned some after one year in the stack and it seemed to do pretty well. I would use it for shoulder season or for mixing in with oak during the winter. Seemed to leave a bit more ash but it splits pretty nice in my experience.
In my experience walnut of any breed is so so. I usually get warmer dealing with it fer farwood than the BTU.s I get out of it in the stove. But, that being said, if it makes smoke, it makes heat so iffn you aint gonna build furniture outta it stack it and burn it.
Well, reading this got me curious, so I checked a few splits today. Split and stacked this time last year. Now, they were off the top of the stack, in probably the most ideal drying location. But they were big, about 5x8". And they got rained on today Don't know if it stinks. I'll let you know tomorrow.
