Hoping to make this season my first I am located in WV and am looking for suggestions for DP coon traps as well as what size foot holds for sets that could hold fox, bobcat, coyotes. The DP coon traps I have been considering are the Freedom, Bridger T3 and the Lil Grizz. I have been thinking #3 coil spring footholds but not sure of brand or offset jaw or not.

As a kid i used to trap muskrats with my uncle. When i see those pics of rats piled up it sure brings me back. I'd love to get in to it again sometime soon. My uncle still traps beavers, and coons. Unfortunately footholds are illegal in NJ

Not legal where I'm from either.

Section 80A. Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, a person shall not use, set, place, maintain, manufacture or possess any trap for the purpose of capturing furbearing mammals, except for common type mouse and rat traps, nets, and box or cage type traps, as otherwise permitted by law. A box or cage type trap is one that confines the whole animal without grasping any part of the animal, including Hancock or Bailey’s type live trap for beavers. Other than nets and common type mouse or rat traps, traps designed to capture and hold a furbearing mammal by gripping the mammal’s body, or body part are prohibited, including steel jaw leghold traps, padded leghold traps, and snares.

The above provision shall not apply to the use of prohibited devices by federal and state departments of health or municipal boards of health for the purpose of protection from threats to human health and safety. We are limited to 6 1/2" inside jaw for foot holds and 5" on body grips for above water sets

    Trapped a some years ago.
Lynx, wolverine , Victor #4 double long spring
330 conibear for beaver & otter (some sets for wolverine)
    Snares for coyote & wolverine.
    #2 double coil for fox
    # 1-1/2 for marten

    Never liked the offset jaws
Bobcat my guess would be a #3, they have a pretty big foot. (& coyote,)
#3 is a little big for fox

You'll have fun & you'll learn more about the target animals than you can ever read in a book.
You will gain lots of respect for the critters too.
Critters are a lot smarter than most think.
When you can leg hold trap a coyote, you're a trapper ;)
