Oldest stuff in my stacks is 3 years, I'm currently on the 3 year plan and would like to keep it that way. This year I'm burning the shorts and uglies for now, then I have a little pine and a lot of oak, mulberry, and locust. Should be a fun year!
Ask lukem he has dinosaur wood Hay, lukem http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/chain-for-hard-wood.7194/
Hi, Dennis. There's close to a cord here of 4+ y.o. sugar maple & black locust. Yeah, super-primo. Couple of cords of 3 y.o. red oak and black cherry. Ditto super-primo, the oak at least. Not rushing to send either of these through the stove. Might burn some come January, especially the cherry. Always use the worst first- another Yankee M.O.
Have some 4 year CSS birch. Well had, I just finished it up & had to re-fill the wood box. The 3 year stuff I'm using now is burning as well aw the 4 year did.
Most of my wood is css for 2 years. However, scrounged some 3-5" rounds about 2 years ago that I did not split. It looked like it had been in the fence row for years. Put it in the shed about a year ago. It is very dark grey. Started a small fire two nights ago with the old rounds. Man, it light right up, started the secondaries almost immediately. Turned the air all the way down to get the lazy flames and set that stove for about 4 hours. Those rounds had to be 5+ years old or even older. I was amazed at how much the air could be turned down.
My oldest stuff was CSS this spring. But all of it, except for one tree from my backyard, was dead standing or fallen for who knows how long. The stuff I'm burning this year is soft maple, poplar, and probably some ash tops from a massive standing dead tree that came down this spring. All of it is around 15%. I'm busting my butt trying to get ahead though. I got at least another year CSS ahead of all this. By this time next year, I should have my 3 years in place.
Great thread, and great example Dennis. I'm still trying hard to get farther ahead, you are a good role model my friend. Currently I'm burning my oldest stacks, which are Madrone and Fir, both only about 2.5 years old. The Madrone was standing dead, and the fir does dry fast in our dry summers. Still, someday I hope to be that far ahead.
Thats crazy talk we all know wood left out that many years will be rotted and punky Must be your age Dennis. I bet you just forgot you cut that wood 6 months to a year ago!!
15 cord sitting on pallets top covered . Five at 2 1/2 years , five at 2 years and five at 6 month to 1year. 90% of it is from dead standing red oak the rest is white pine.
