Splitting a 10" I get 2 sq. splits for building a cross staked ends. round was more like a 10" x 11'" oval Takes a lot longer to measure & draw lines on every round. Glad I was having fun & good weather.
Nice job Dave, looks like you're chipping away at it. Instead if marking every round, you might want to hook up a laser system on the splitter.
I could draw the lines but mine would split some other direction for sure.lol awesome job and great planning.
Great pics Dave, you should consider adding some of those to the galleries! (I like the ones with the numbers a lot!)
That's what normally happens with me. Mother Nature seems to always have another idea. I can remember working with Dad's old splitter, rolling a few tough chunks around and it finally split in a spot you would have never tried for the first 3 options. You just never know.
On sale (AIH less then $4/pr), so I bought a dozen pack, the finger tips last longer than leather, but not great for warmth. (good grippers too) LOL Good idea. I thought an x-ray would be nice too, get an ideas of which way to draw the lines to get straighter splits. Seems my square splits are rarely square like Backwoodsavage's are. But Mother nature has lots of hidden angles & curves, but sometimes I get a near perfect sq split. (they burn better. LOL ) Just a few pics to show how that splitting wood isn't a mindless process, you can have fun & get some good results with a quick visual of the rounds. I do lots of 1/2s, 1/3rds & 1/4ths >>>... but the big rounds are the fun ones, getting over 9 splits from one round is big wood here (for birch)
winter starting here, had a dusting of white stuff last night. click on the weather link in my signature To be 24° Wednesday
Great idea for end stacking Dave, they laugh at my t-posts but I don't think I have cut up a straight grained tree in over 6 weeks. Took down a 60ft dead standing cherry Sunday almost all straight trunk and thought this will be nice splitting. Wrong, had a twist growth to it and split like dry elm in a way, full cycle every split. harder to stack but it all burns. That colder weather should firm up your skidding trails some if it stays.
