My new bro in law had a little more than he wanted with this one. It was a pretty big elm, at least 3' diameter before the first crotch. LOTS of pressure and pinch points here. I should have had him take some pics while I was working. I was too busy trying not to die or ruin a saw. The only casualties were a few cutters that made contact when I was freeing a pinched saw. Ended up with this about three hours later. The best part here is that I don't have to do any more with it. I got to put my saws in the truck and go home, and they'll end up with a nice pile of firewood.
Good job done. Hope your back isn't talking to you. Must have been one heck of a storm to have that trunk twisted apart.
Wow, gnarly looking tree. Glad everything went well. Nice looking rounds too. Wonder how they'll split...
I'm impressed Jeff T. That gave me an idea for a new thread....post up your pics of the nastiest, meanest, most dangerous, deadly, twisted up, gnarled, splintered, widow makin', tree you ever dropped or bucked up
Glad for a 'good news' turnout. Just the pics alone make this mess look like something bad is gonna happen. Glad it worked out for you
My first thought was to start at the top and work towards the stump, but there was a lot going on at that end you can't see in the pic. Had to get it all on the ground first. My back is fine, but my pecs and arms ache. I did a lot of reaching over my head with a 28" bar. I didn't need the extra length, but it kept me a little father away from the action. And my hands are really sore, haven't cut much in a few months. That tree was surprisingly healthy. The only bad spot was the rotten crotch where it split. Was otherwise solid all the way up. The first pic was about a week after it blew down, on Sep 5. The leaves were just turning yellow.
From that first pic., did you give them a "You're gonna owe me for this" look before you fired up the saw?
Man that was alot of work . definitely could've been nasty on the other end.lots of stored up energy down there.Glad you got it all busted up.I hope you got a steak out of it!
Yeah, there was a lotta looking, a little cutting, and then more looking. At least I had a good spotter.
