Made a trip to the floor today. Got three small trunks of dead and mostly barkless Oak, that filled the back of the Jeep. I'm guesstimating 3/4 of a "face" @16". Sorry for the forbidden term, but I didn't feel like doing the math for cord amount. Anyway, here are some pics to prove it happened. Need to get it unloaded and S/S soon. There are tons of dead trunks still standing and at least partially barkless like the one in the pic .... to the left of the rounds. This one was farther out that I had to walk back to the Jeep, a couple rounds at a time. This one was right behind the Jeep. Dropped it and only got about half before I ran out of room in the Jeep. And the Jeep filled to the brim......3 rows deep. 4'x2'x16".
This is at the sis-in-laws place about 5 miles from me. She's got 10 acres and about 7 are like this with mostly Oak and Maple...some Poplar. I've only gotten a little more than 2 cord from there, but this will be my go to spot for quite a while. Today, I was back in with the Jeep about 300', and one of the trunks was at least another 100' back where I could only get to by walking. I'm gradually working on developing trails, but stuff keeps falling in my way. More firewood, eh?
Get it this week Dave. Once the 15th hits, perhaps it is time for you to take off some time in the woods.
Nice wood, nice pics & nice work Looks like a career for cutting for quite a while & nice , level, solid ground. I see a trailer hitch, get some rope, drag the logs to where you can drive to, then buck them I take 200' or so along in a 5 gallon bucket, many times it saves lots of carrying. It will add up pretty fast , 4 loads is near a cord +/-. Fresh air & good exercise. PS: Be careful out there on windy days
Yep, deer season. Found a tree stand back a ways and thought it might be on her property, so I went to investigate. It's on the neighbors, so no problem. Good idea on the rope Dave, but what kind do you use? That would be easier than taking the wheelbarrow with me.
I'm not sure I'll get over there more than once more this year, but it's ok. I've got 2 more years of wood in the back stacks and then some once the new stove gets here. If the ticks aren't too bad in the spring, I'll go then or just wait until mid-late June when they seem to go into hiding somewhat.
Very nice today....some sun and about 60 or so. Didn't see much of the sun back there with the canopy still largely intact, but it was a good day. I forgot that we had the time change and it gets dark about 5:30-6:00. I meant to get the Jeep emptied before dark , but ended up doing it by the light of the motion light over the shop door.
Big enough it don't break. LOL Most of mine is 1/2". I have some of the no stretch synthetic that works well. Chain around the log attached to the rope. Sometime I put a pulley as high up a tree as I can, then pull. helps to see what's going on.
Forgot...in the second pic, I surprised myself a little. The tree dropped right between the trees I thought hoped it would, but got ever so slightly hung up on a very small Maple. Knew that would happen too, and it went down very slowly once it hit that tree. I left a bit too much hinge, especially on the far side of the back cut. Once it started to go, I got outta' Dodge. Quite a lean on that one. Still learning. Last pic, I took some of the rounds on top and moved 'em back, then cut up and put another 10 rounds in. No Oak left behind. Well, a whole bunch got left behind, but whatev.
I thought I was the only non hunter member in this forum??? If you are not a hunter, why were you interested in that tree stand?
It looked like it was on my sis-in-laws property, and she's not given anyone permission for that. I found the property line stakes and it's on the next door neighbor's land. Nothing she can do about that.
Got some of the Oak S/S, and most of the Maple before I heard a clunking sound behind me. Turns out I forgot to set the latch on the hitch, so the trailer tilted back and dumped part of the load. Decided that was a good time to stop for the day, and put away all the toys tools. Put the MM on a couple splits, and this is what I saw. 18% ....not too shabby for just split rounds. I put it on the #2 setting and got similar results.
