I've got a X27 and a 12 lb maul from lowes. I'm wanting something in between them. Which would you guys get? The stihl pa 80 or husqvarna splitting axe or ???
I've got a 6 pound collins splitting maul that has become my second most used tool after the Fiskars.
You already have a splitting axe in the Fiskars. Another splitting axe would be repetitive, unless you like to collect splitting axes. I have the Oschenkopf version of the Stihl PA 80. It is built like a German tank. If "feel" is your thing you won't like it, but it splits with authority. It is a good fit between your Fiskars and 12 lb maul at about 6.5 lbs. I would consider the Husqvarna splitting maul (I've never used one but would like to) if I were you instead of the splitting axe; it is about the same wt. as the Stihl PA 80.
I'm wanting something with a little more oomph than the fiskars. On some hardwoods it just bounces and the maul will bust it but is a lot more weight than I feel like I need to swing. We split all by hand so I'm wanting to make it as easy as possible. The stihl PA 50 felt good to me. The fiskars works but feels cheap and I've broken one handle splitting elm with it.
Did you get a replacement? I also broke an x27, it cracked just below the head, first day I was using it, no overstrikes. I took a picture a filed a claim through fiskars website and had a replacement in hand in about a week. The second one has been fine for about 6 cords.
Find whatever feels best to you. I always thought the 6 pounder was too light. The fiskars 27 is great for easy stuff, then the 8 lbs. for the medium stuff then the hydraulic splitter for the nasty stuff. If I don't want to mess with it, I drop off all the crazies to the farmer down the road that has a owb. It eats anything you can feed it.
O crap another Fiskars war The husqvarna splitting axe is very nice ! I used my friends and was very impressed with how it felt in the hand and how it split. The other axe I liked WAY more than any other I have used was the Gransfors Burks splitting axe. They are pricey but worth every penny. http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/gransforsbrukssplittingaxelarge.aspx
The Fiskars is nice but damm those Gransfors look sweet I just cant bring myself to spend that much money on one yet.
I got a replacement quickly. I have split 2 cord or so with the new one. I guess its the cheap plastic handle that doesn't feel right to me. I will try to narrow my choices down sooner with the husky and gransfors now in the mix. I like the stihl axe i just wish they had the 6.6lb in stock.
I recently bucked some hickory that gave me fits splitting. I decided to regress and try using a wedge again. I now use a sharp wedge as my supplement to the X27 and the 10# maul. once i get the round split it seems to take the pressure off and i can finish splitting with my x27
Fiskars X15 felling axe. It's useful for splitting too. I see no need to buy another splitting axe since I have an X27.
No, never heard of that one. Hum a few bars how does it go? I just looked at Fiskars global site and it was not listed.
