In the market for one, so many of them are foam? Different layers and such. Currently we have a 1.5" memory foam topper on our firm coil mattress. most comfortable bed we have ever had though the topper can get hot sometimes. I'd appreciate anyones thoughts.
When I'm ready to sleep, doesn't seem to matter much. The floor or the couch seem to be the best on my back in all honesty. Have slept in the truck a few times on the way out wood deliveries, that's a rough night.
I was that way my whole life, so full of energy that I could sleep anywhere when I needed to, but these days I require more hours of sleep than I'd like to... I am inclined to get another inexpensive firm coil mattress (no pillowtop/euro) again and reuse the old topper. Just seems the new foam ones are getting great reviews. Whatever I get it will have to be shipped here, waiting for columbus day sales or black friday sales but there are less expensive foam mattresses with free shipping now. Queen size is not big enough for nights the lil one crawls in with us, and as soon as I drift off the dogs pile on too! I end up waking to the edge of the bed with no covers
The mattresses I had are the real soft, sink into it 4 feet ones. My folks had one like that in their camper that I slept on for a couple weeks. After a couple nights of sleeping on the floor I ended up putting a sheet of thin plywood under the sheets. My Mom mentioned how did I like the fancy memory foam NASA space shuttle $$ bed.... I told her the floor was more comfy haha!
I have to tell about an experience we had with the sleep number. They had a setup in a mall one time and we had to try them out. My wife really liked them but I was not sure. Just to check, I tried different ones in that store although they were the same mattress. On the 3rd one I tried, as I was getting up, the cover ripped. I was simply amazed at how thin it was! Needless to say, we did not buy. However, we do know of a few folks that have them and they love them. So, perhaps there was just a flaw but when I saw how easy it ripped and how thin it was, there was no way we was going to buy then. I'll add that I do like a pillowtop mattress.
We have had our sleep number over 10 years now. Love it. I bought mine on one of those home shopping networks so I was able to spread the payments out. Back then, it was about $1400. I use it with a foam pillow designed for people who have a bipap mask on during the night. These beds are good when the are differences in firmness needed.
My wife and I have a sleep number. I'm not sure it is worth what I paid for it, and I don't think I'd buy one again, but it's nice to adjust the firmness if you want. My favorite is the cheap mattress with the foam on top. Lay on it, sink in about six inches, wake up the next day.
That it the exact description of what I am trying to replace now. The most comfortable we have ever been! FIRM mattress, no pillowtop etc, and a super comfortable memory foam topper (2"?). I just didnt realize what a smoking deal I found on the SpringAir mattress a few years ago.
+1 wildwest You may want to stack wood around yours to keep the dogs out. Kids will find their way over eventually.
We bought our son his first "big boy bed" earlier this year. We got him a latex mattress. Latex is much better than innerspring and it doesn't have all those nasty/harmful fire retardant chemicals. We're going to be getting our daughter the exact same mattress next Spring and my wife and I will probably pick one up in another year or two and ditch our old innerspring. The mattress industry can be very tricky and shady. Each retailer has their own names for their product so it's hard to compare. The marketing that goes into the product is also not conducive to making an educated purchase. There is a site called mattress underground that is very informative about the mattress industry and their product. I would recommend doing some reading before you make a purchase.
I've had an Isoform mattress for about 7 years now, and still love it. It's basically a cheaper, but still high quality Tempurpedic like memory foam mattress. The only downside is it puts off a chemical smell for a month or so. I just dealt with it because I needed a mattress, but if I did it again I'd let it air out in a garage first for a few weeks. After it airs out the smell goes away. http://www.isoform.com/ My parents found a deal on a used Sleep Number from a friend of theirs, and Dad praises it as much as I praise Isoform. Both of us have bad backs, and they seem much better than spring mattresses for that. I will say though that it's a treat when the wife and I sleep on a spring mattress. Well, maybe not when we are actually sleeping, but the air and foam mattresses absorb a lot of energy, while the spring mattresses gives you back that energy for extra-curricular activities. I wouldn't make my decision based on that, but it's a lot more work on our foam mattress!
