Scrap yard wouldn't take my old tech, so we decorated them and lined them against the sidewalk for Halloween. Now I have until November to figure out what to do wth them.
Our local Transfer Station (temporary trash collection spot) will accept all old electronics. They have a separate place you must put them, but all eventually get set on pallets, shrink wrapped, and taken somewhere to be broken down and recycled. You do get charged for the weight though. But it isn't that much.
We toss in dumpster, and smash down with backhoe when full. Pack in till have to staple the trash to the pile, then call for pickup. Garbage truck about tips over when picking up.
Not that in aware of, it's the vacuum tubes they seem to object to. They didn't want the printer because it was too plasticky.
I'm thinking the last thing I'd want in my yard on Halloween would be glass - even if I didn't care about the object. It's one thing to have pumpkin bits rot away on the sidewalk...exploding CRT's and glass would be a different story
We have only had problems with pumpkins coming up missing-- if they want to haul these away I will be quite happy.
All kinds of nasty stuff: Lead Cadmium Mercury Chromium a Couple of fire retardant chemicals called polybromated something or other, a somewhat less nasty version of our old friend PCBs. All this stuff gets into our water supply from landfills or our air when trash is incinerated... and in SE Asia countries was making workers in recycling plants (who where not given adequate protection) sick. Hence the reason for regulations like RoHS to restrict their use in manufacturing. Of course RoHS has a downside... non lead solder joints degrade over time, part of the reason that modern electronics dont last like they used to. So no, I wouldn't just throw it in the trash.
