I started our first fire of the year in the wee dark hours of this morning. The Wife was snug and safe in bed while I was laying the fire in the stove and lighting it off. All the lights in the house were off as I slid into my fat leather recliner, slightly to the left of the fire, with my coffee. Outside was especially dark with a heavy fog and damp. I must have fallen into a state between wakefulness and sleep as the light and dark chased each other in the circle of warmth before the stove. It was as if the mist from outside had crept into the room and I perceived forms and faces before the fire. People I had known, loved ones and family lost, old friends past. I am comforted as the Good Book tells me that I will be reunited with all these people! But somehow the mist took form of two Dogs, one red, one black and tan, on fat pillows before the fire. Rebecca the Red setter and Megan the Gordon Setter. And what of these two passed loved ones. The Good Book says little about our four footed friends. But my Heart tells me something! Just as our Father is Loyal Love and he resurrects his loyal loving human servants, He simply must be aware of the loyalty and unconditional love of our furred friends, those that have crept deeply into our hearts. That has to count for something and I believe it does! My two friends in the mist before the fire leave off their twitching paws and wrinkling noses to lift their heads and I look into their eyes and see peace and love and certain knowledge of good times together to come again. The mist and fire lit visions fade as dawns light quietly spills into the room. My wife comes downstairs. She looks askance and says, "Your eyes are all red, did you get smoke in your eyes?" I reply "Yes, yes my love, that must have been it"
That smoke in your eyes is tough metalcuttr I hope you’re right brother but the wife and I are going to need a big bed in heaven because the dogs I have had all like to be close to her!

metalcuttr, great story...hopefully the afterlife will reunite us with our pets that have passed prior to us!
When I was about seven or eight I lost my first pet, a large Norwegian forest cat. A few days later I was woken up in the middle of the night to that cat jumping onto my bed. Impossible, but somehow it was there to say goodbye. The same thing happened to my sister when she was in college. She had taken her cat with her when she went away. After a couple years, old age had caught up with it and my sister had to bring it to the vet to put it down humanely. That cat came and visited her in the middle of the night too a few days later. I never told her my story growing up, and she was hesitant about telling me what she experienced, especially being in her early 20s at that point. So at the risk of sounding like a complete crackpot, I do think there's a place for them in the next realm too.
There are some pretty big pet beds that you could get to place on the floor on her side of the bed. I imagine you could find one big enough for you!
