Every day we awake is a blessing, other blessings come our way occasionally too. The family that owns the local campground bought a hardware/tool rental store recently. They are expanding the area around it. Several acres. They had a tree service drop all the trees. The guy that does the clearing called and said they had a bunch of oaks if we wanted them. We started Tuesday morning....... Some of the trees... We started with this one, somebody had already cut a load off the top... The XS4910 and XS461 w/25" bar made the trip. Mr James is the operator, he's in his mid 70's, and loves what he does...he has to dig all the stumps too. This is the stmp from the tree we cut. So heavy he had to roll it out of the hole and to the pile... He's bringing the butt cut to the trailer... Got load home, too heavy to dump, so we unloaded the smaller logs... Able to dump the 2 big logs Got those drug to the pile. This is willow oak, has a large sap ring, will need to get this processed soon. That's 1 load, and didn't get all of the tree. We went back Wednesday morning... 1st load was smaller logs from the day before Dumped and moved to pile... Went back for 2nd load, found another nice willow oak... Got 2 12' logs cut, then Mr James pulled the top out so we could cut it... We brought a chain and our big log tongs. Made loading the big logs a bit more gentle on the trailer... 2nd load Wednesday, had to unload small logs this time too. Big logs... Pile after 3 loads... More to come later, and we haven't gotten the biggest trees yet...
Yes sir. That green oak is heavy, especially when it's sitting all on the trailer. If it was a telescopic dump, it probably would
Dang that's a lot of wood. The wood Gods were looking out for you. Being dropped that close the sheds means you'll process ASAP?
Sure need to process soon, as the large sap ring will get punky in the spring. We will probably put this in totes, it will help ot dry faster.
Another one of my pet peeves about oak is how fast the sapwood grows stuff. Especially in the warmer weather. Mid October through mid April is my ideal time to CSS any should I have to take it. Just some small chestnut oak logs at my next score. Hopefully enough to top off the half cord racks of oak from the last score.
Great score. Was going to nominate you for the You Suck award, but you have a lot of work to make that all into farwood. Nice having good contacts like that.
Inspiring to say the least! Right timing, right tools, right know how. Curious, would you say that willow oak splits wetter or drier than sweet gum?
