I got a text from a retired former coworker yesterday asking if I wanted to take some wood off his hands. Looks like a little bit of red oak and a bunch of small to medium sized pieces of American elm, of which he has a lot of on his property. The plan is to swing by tomorrow morning with my new used truck that I haven’t scrounged with yet. Naturally I’ll post pictures when the time comes. Call me crazy but I’m kind of excited about the elm, especially the smaller stuff with no bark :loco:  Elm is semi rare for me to scrounge, and barkless is my preferred variety.

Tell him to throw in the wheelbarrow and its a deal.

All kidding aside, it was only a matter of time before the "new" truck was getting its call to haul wood. After seeing it in person would a spray on bed liner be beneficial?

Actually I took its virginity with the stuff I gave you last month. Be too funny if it was cherry!!!

Nothing wrong with having a favorite or preferred wood even if it goes against the grain (sorry for the intended pun). Look at me...ill take cottonwood over oak! :loco:

Nice little haul. I’ll have to go back to get the rest next week. A mix of black cherry, elm, and a bunch of what is some kind of ornamental something or other. There’s a short piece of it on the lower left of the tailgate. The leaves were like dogwood, but the bark is off. Some parts had opposite branching, some parts alternate. A real head scratcher for me. I’ll post close up pictures later on and see if anyone recognizes it. Either way it was dense stuff.

Very unique end grain pattern on that. I’d like to see that ripped. Have a bandsaw or somethin?

I thought about Mimosa, but when he said leaves were like dogwood, eliminated that. And bark not right.
    I burnt Mimosa already...not bad.

I was almost thinking pear but the leaves weren’t quite right for Bradford pear. It might be another variety. The guy said the tree never bore fruit, but that could just mean there wasn’t anything close by to cross pollinate it.

Weird because that’s why they’re considered invasive. The birds eat the small round pears they produce and poop the seeds out everywhere.
