Was out riding "Red Rover", my little 125 Honda trail bike, on Sunday and went past a yard covered with chips from a tree service. There were 6 very large rounds of Doug Fir stood up in the yard and several 10ish foot long logs as well. I stopped, thinking that they had had a tree removed, and asked about the rounds. Seems they had called for a chip drop from a gyppo tree service to cover their front yard. The service came when they were not there with a dump truck from their yard. The rounds and logs were included with the chips and the outfit would not take them back. I would have made an issue if treated like that but they did not. Instead the home owners stood the rounds on end in a circle and chipped around them for the kids to play on. The Lady said they wished them gone so I went today and picked up 4 of the rounds (they decided to keep two) and the misc logs. They had been stood up for 2 months and I had to use the crane to topple them they were so heavy. Would you believe they were all exactly 32" long? I danced a jig! I cut each round into two 16" rounds and loaded them with the crane. Not a huge score but a solid trailer load! Just have to keep your eyes open and ask.
Like this? I probably would've done the same with 32" at that size. Irks me when I have to end up with a shorty on huge rounds. The wood Gods were on you side for sure!
Thanks for helping them out metalcuttr Happy homeowner wanted some wood chips for kids to play on with.. homeowner generally can’t deal with big rounds
I need to revisit my definition of "small" if that is what that is considered in these parts of internet
May have only been a trailer load, but rounds that size will make a lot of nice splits. Well done, my friend. I know that winch came in handy on those rounds.
Funny story! When I first went to the house, the Wife came to the door and was very peasant when she gave me permission to take the wood. The next morning I arrived and went to the door to alert them that I would be running the chainsaw. The Wife's Mother (a very nice looking woman of maybe 64 years old) answered the door, looked me up and down slowly, and said "I just had to see the kind of man who was going to handle those huge rounds. My Son in Law (very disparaging tone) had to have 3 friends help him to move them around"! "You look like you can handle the job she said with approval." I was feeling pretty Manly for a 74 year old! When I had sawed and loaded the rounds I again went to the door to ask about the smaller logs. The SIL came to the door and I kinda thought "well this explains a lot". He was a rather small man with a pot belly and was an accountant who worked from home. To be fair, he was very nice and remember, I had to have a winch to help me move the rounds. I sawed and loaded the smaller logs. When I was telling my sister about the incident with the MIL, I said "I bucked the smaller logs up and stood them in a row and started walking down the line with the maul busting them apart". I said, "I was just imagining the attractive MIL peeking out the window as I was splitting". My sister allowed a look of horror to come over her face and said "Oh My Gosh, Russell, Please tell me you didn't take your shirt off"!! This from my sister who claims to love me!
There was no way I would have taken my shirt off! There were some small children across the street that could have been emotionally scarred for life!
Why's everbody always picking on me? Although, EODMSgt , If that is supposed to be me, compared to the original, I'm looking pretty good! Nice Work with the graphics!
Yeah Russ. I hope I look that trim when I'm your age. I get picked just as much and I'm a good sport. All in good fun.
