The job I'm working has them flying around and I noticed a couple small TOH's on the edge of the driveway. Upon closer inspection today the base of them were covered with SLF's worse than this photo. Showed the lady and she OKed the use of fire to eradicate them. I had some fun with the blowtorch and guessing I killed over 100. I still have that TOH to harvest from last week. Wonder how bad they are there?
They've now been seen in town. I'll be looking for them. There are wild grape vines throughout the area. other than maples, I'm not sure if there's anything on the property they'd damage. Propane torch at the ready.
Theyre not fond of fire! Cant believe how I've run into SLF's in the last two weeks. First at a job (not firewood related) where the torch first was used, second was the TOH I scored this week. 20" stump and a heaping load of wood. Last was yesterday with the takedown of four small trees. A clump of SLFs 10' up and their secretions covering the leaves of the leaves below. Looked like someone sprayed motor oil on them. I saved some of the wood here. Rest went to compost center.

First time I saw one like that a couple years back and didn't know what it was either. They jump just like the mature lantern fly does. I called it a ladybug on steroids.
I do. I was chatting with the guy next to me getting gas and one landed at his feet. I pointed and he stomped it. Vacationing on the cape as I type. Noticed TOH behind the motel. Didn't see any of them from what I could tell. Wonder how bad they are at jo191145's place with the remaining trees? I have over a half cord of the splits to sort and stack.
TOH - not a fan. What a stinky wood when it's green. I haven't seen any of the lantern flies around, but I must pull out a 100 TOH saplings in my yard every week. They're viscous. TOH burns ok though.
Keltic kitchen on rt28 Captain Parker's has really good chowder. Also on rt28 A bit further east/south on rt28 is the Pancake man. Good breakfast. Parking can be tight, but Spanky's on Hyannis harbor is a nice clam shack kind of place There's tourist maps for free at most any place you stop at.
The one lone tree on the edge of the field was infested. Told the women and they sprayed them. Haven’t looked lately to see how good a job they did. Not sure about the ones out in the woods. I’ll have to take a look. I’ll be taking them down and inspecting for eggs. Either mix them in as firewood or burn it in the pit. I know a bunch just got blown onto the lake. Woman said the ducks were having a field day. Internet says our critters don’t like them because they taste bad. I’ve seen chatter on the web that some birds are developing a taste for them and helping to eradicate them. One guy even said he would kill them and put them on his bird feeders so the birds learned of the new food source in town. Social media is full of goofballs but maybe that’s not a crazy idea either.
Ill have to place a squished one on the feeder and see what happens. No TOH in my yard or immediate area that I'm aware of, but have seen the flies in my yard. I've placed grubs from wood on the feeder and they take them.
Some have mentioned the smell from TOH. I picked up some mystery rounds from a score yesterday. After thinking about the bark pattern I came to the conclusion it’s Aspen,,,old dead Aspen. It’s still on the trailer cooking in the sun. Just walked by and it reeks like Horse manure. Is that a common thing for old Aspen? Maybe it’s an old TOH? There were horses on this property at one time,,,,,,maybe it picked it up from the ground? Tree id.
