A retired coworker called me yesterday, said his sister had a big oak tree taken down...did I want it??
I rode by the place after work yesterday, the city workers picked up the smaller pieces, this is what's left...
I know it has some metal in it...have
a ladle, yall...
This piece is huge, they tried cutting it in to, but stopped
Here's the full details...she hired an out-of-town tree service to take it down, she says she didn't tell them to leave the wood, she was gone when they cut it and they put it in another lady's yard.....
Here's my dilemma...some of it is good wood, most will be a lot of work...is it worth the time to haul equipment 15 miles 1 way to get...tractor won't handle that big stuff without considerable cutting and our MS461 is in MI getting an XS sticker on it...the XS400 will pull a 28" bar...and I'm very short on time...working all the way till Friday morning, then going on a trip...

And she probably wants it done for FREE...

As busy as you always are, I would say not worth it.

 

Metal? Could be more than one utensil. The whole kitchen drawer could be in there

 

Leave that one alone all day long.

 

Unless you're gonna do it more as a favor and not just for the wood I'd leave it. Even then with possible metal in it I'd pass

 

So a sister of a former co-worker. Hmm...

Any future wood leads possible? If not, forget it.

 

I’m a no on wrecking chains and burning fuel for a stump and knot pile.

 

If there’s no paycheck involved in that one, it’s a hard pass.

 

Pretty gnarly! I think I would pass on that pile.

 

If it was the whole tree, I’d be on my way to help, lol. The wood to punishment ratio on that job is very low.
One thing it’s good for though is cookie cuttin’. Short cookies chunked up into smoker wood.. . Definitely only if the hydros can lift it in the trailer.
I’ve been itching for an easy score lately.

Hard pass … she paid another company to do it they didn’t finish it…

loading equipment, hauling equipment and you will be lucky to only wreck one chain on that monster..
Those holes with dirt in them (rotted whatever) will make you file chains every cut like hitting ground IME..

and with out 70cc saw

I wouldn’t like that job for money

 

She needs to call that tree service back to finish their job! Especially since they put it on someone else's property!

Wouldnt touch it with a ten foot chainsaw unless a paying job. I see a lot of hard labor there even with equipment.

If you were low on inventory I'd say yes, but primo logs seem to find you easily and knowing the quality of firewood you produce this type of cut im sure frustrates you.

Easy pass on my part, plus you know how much I loooove oak.

Probably gonna pass, as everyone has advised, especially time constraints...

 

I hardly have time to get the sweet score that just fell into my lap, and it’s just back into a garage and toss it in the truck and I should have help with the tossing

 

I'm in agreement with what's been said thus far about passing on this. I mean, you could definitely extract a few nice crotch/rot free rounds out of what's there, but at that point is it even worth it? For a guy that brings home heaping trailer loads of straight logs on the regular this looks too much like work. That and leaving all the scraps would probably annoy the homeowner more than anything.

 

Looks like the headache portion was left. Where'd all the good wood go??
