Yeah. I think California and texas are the only states longer than 500 miles in one direction.

 

Installed my power stop towing brake pads and rotors on the front of my truck today. Also flushed and changed brake fluid as well. The old left front was dragging. Got that fixed with the new hardware the kit came with. It stops even better now and probably will get some mpg back.

 

Tennessee and Virginia are both pretty close to 500 miles "broad", east to west, but may not be over 500. I can tell you they both seem longer than that when you're doing a marathon drive...
And then there's Alaska.

I was going to say, Alaska definitely has to be. I'm pretty knowledgeable about geography compared to most people I know, but coming from a place with.... loveably grotesque geography, if you will, when it comes to travel routes, I'm not always confident estimating distances in other parts of the continent.

Speaking of Tennessee...

If anyone has an interest in that kinda thing, I'll share a bit of research I came up with a while back, when I had a few curious Americans ask a couple questions on another forum.

Somewhat like Michigan's two peninsulas, NL is split into two main "pieces" separated by water, Labrador on the continental mainland and the island of Newfoundland. Again comparable to MI, the more northern section is much more sparsely populated, but to a greater extreme in our case - Labrador has less than 10% of our province's population, yet 71% of it's land area. Or, 0.23 per square mile, vs 11.37 per square mile on the island.

I already knew there were only 3 states bigger than NL by land area, namely Texas, California, and Alaska. Nothing shocking there, Canada's provinces and territories do average far more area than the 50 states. (Some of Australia's states are massive, and it blows my mind that our province alone is 1.75 bigger than Great Britain in entirety. I'd love to visit both, but I digress)

I'd never thought to learn which state was closest in area to the island of Newfoundland alone....it's Tennessee, and not much difference at all, about 1,000 square miles less.
However, TN is a landlocked state with a rectangular-ish border. Our island is, as a local comedian once put it, like a sketch by Picasso. I can't beat that description off the top of my head. So, our coastline is approximately six times the length of Tennessee's border, for almost the same square mileage. Beyond that, I look at a map of TN, and it's pretty obvious that I could draw a straight line between any two parts of the state, and chances are, you could more or less follow that imaginary line by road.

Whereas, something like the first situation pictured below is very common around here. Those two communities are less than 50 kilometers apart as the crow flies, but nearly 200 km by road because you have to drive around a 1,295 square km bay.
As the crow flies, or, by boat - because that's how this island was originally meant to be traveled. And the transition to trucks and cars was no small factor in a lot of our communities becoming ghost towns.
The second picture I've attached is a more extreme case. 43 km by bird or boat, 645 km by truck. You'd think Google maps is missing something, there must be a shortcut. There isn't.

You can also move 500 miles (as the crow flies) within NL, from the south coast of the island to Cartwright, Labrador. The drive would be more like 1,000 miles. You could fly further north yet, but those communities are isolated villages with no road access, mostly populated by natives.

If it doesn't go without saying, None of this is bragging or one against the other, or anything like that. just a fun comparison for curiosity's sake.

 

Florida is pretty dang close to 500 miles N to S if you include the Keys. Otherwise it's only about 450 ,iles.

Another storm rolled through and took the power out.

 

0.67" rain this morning and got up to 80f for the high. Did do some mowing this morning and hoped to do so splitting but decided to load a pile of bonfire wood in the pickup to take out to Bunny's place. Forgot to take a picture but will try to remember in the morning.

It was stupid humid this am as well. Around noonish a front moved through and knocked the humidity out a bit. It still got to 85° today.

It was a boat day, so humidity doesn't bother you as much when you're in a boat, and in the water
