We've begun the big patio/pizza oven project!

Yes sir I certainly do fondly remember that day, I had a broken belt in my one back tire and we enjoyed a nice lunch in that little diner while we waited for it to be repaired on our way to Well Seasoned s GTG. I gotta get back to NH, hoping to go up this fall. Would love to see you again also my friend! Give the Mrs. a big hug from me and build her a pizza oven!! God Bless yinz as well!

 

My project started out kinda small, ended up ridiculous......nothing wrong with a small simple oven, after buildng this one (with the mason who knew what he was doing) they're pretty simple, just do your research and don't skimp out on materials.

 

Been a hot minute since I've posted here, but we've dome some upgrades to the pizza patio. Built a big TV cabinet/firewood rack out of old barnwood and two 8×8 locusts post I had milled. Here's some pics of it. We started that project back in October of last year and I just finished it up the other day.


Here's the start of the project, late last fall. Used two 8"×8"x10' locusts posts from a big tree we took down in 2024 as the foundation. They were sunken into the ground 5' deep. It was fun hand digging those holes! The timbers are all true 2× hemlock from an antique barn. Ripped them to the dimensions needed, leaving the weathered natural edges exposed where you'd see them. I wanted it to look old.








Next the whole structure was wrapped with 1/2" sheeting grade plywood.




Then winter hit, and hit HARD.....lol

 

Picked back up on the project late spring. Wrapped rhe entire structure with 60lb black felt paper with 1/2 overlap, wrapped the top with rubber roofing as well as the custom made bi-fold doors. I built them in a manner as to seal up nicely from weather and bug infiltration.
Here I am lining the interior with weathered pine boards from an old picket fence to hide all that plywood.


Pic of the finished interior....looks old and rustic, just the way we wanted it. Note the old recycled galvanized tin roof, also from an old barn.


Grinding off the exposed screw tips from applying the barnwood to the bi-fold doors. These doors turned out amazing.

Close-up of my antique hinges I modified for the project. Found three matching straps on ebay, and two antique rams horn mounts. I had to make two replica rams horns and one replica strap. Can you tell which ones I fabbed?




Filling up some good oak pizza oven wood in the storage area underneath.

Dan and I hanging the new 4k 75" big screen inside the cabinet. It barely fit!!


FINALLY, getting to actually relax with the new setup last week!

 

And just finished this planter log up for the wife this weekend to go behind the pizza oven counter. We took down an ash tree that was still alive on Saturday, it had been receiving injections for years to protect it from the EAB but the current homeowner didn't want the cost and the tree hadn't been treated in several years, leading to its demise. Had a perfect butt log for the planter she wanted. It's around 7' long and 20" diameter. First time I hollowed out a log in this manner, went fairly well.

Got the log mostly hollowed out, made "pizza cuts" and used a big digging bar to pop them loose.


Almost a canoe!!


Sanded both ends smooth and burned them to show the end grain, drilled holes alomg the bottom for drainage. Mrs. Overkill didn't waste any time getting it filled up and planted!

I still have to repair the flue for the pizza oven, ive got the old damaged section removed and have to pick up a replacement clay liner. Sadly, we didn't have a pizza night at our Hog Dayz GTG this past June because of the damaged liner and the TV shed project wasn't quite done yet. It'll be ready for next year though!
