Sweet load. Were you out/running out of logs to cut? At least conditions haven't been too bad for making firewood.
I was down to about a day and a half worth. Have had a bunch of landscaping jobs recently or I would have been out.
$650. Got another nicer and bigger load today. Didn’t take pictures but that was $750. Yeah that first load isn’t the pertiest but it beats tree service logs.
Spent Sunday-4am this morning out of town so I needed to do some work on the firewood piles. Figures it would be one of the hottest days we ever get. I slept a little and only worked 8-12. Was around 95/96 when I stopped.
The goal is to get this pile of logs cut by the end of July. It’s just under 100 logs in total. Most are roughly 16 feet or so but the one on the forks is a tad over 22 feet long. I have 3 smaller piles and then 1 much larger pile of logs stocked at the moment.
Just curious if you're seeing any issues arising with supply of hardwood (not from scrounges) and/or fuel costs (and I get that prices vary greatly based on location). I don't deal in selling so don't pay too much attention to it however I came across this one seller's dire warning today and wonder if it's just more a scare tactic to bump prices and sales to the urban-folk who already pay high prices for firewood. I get that there are fluctuations in gas/diesel prices at the moment, but with 85% of NH being wooded, I've never heard of a "hardwood shortage". I'm not here to name names or bust on the company (if people are willing to pay ridiculous prices than that's on them) but the scare tactic advertisement kind of irks me. (This firewood seller is towards the southern part of the state and they only list ash, beech, maple and birch for hardwoods. Up my way if I wanted to buy firewood I could get seasoned for about $350-$400 a cord (delivered) and all the green I could want for $250-$300 (delivered)). If prices have really gotten that high, I'm once again glad I have plenty of standing dead oak for the foreseeable future. This is what they posted: IMPORTANT FIREWOOD PRICE & AVAILABILITY UPDATE Unfortunately, off-road diesel has experienced another major increase and is now approximately $5.00 per gallon. In addition to rising fuel, trucking, processing, and equipment costs, the current shortage and limited supply of hardwood logs has become a major factor in this price increase. Because of these increasing costs, we are being forced to adjust pricing across the board on both firewood and delivery. Seasoned firewood is now $495 per cord, plus delivery. We will not be selling green firewood until further notice due to the current availability and cost of hardwood logs. We understand that price increases are never welcome, and this is not a decision we take lightly. We remain committed to providing dependable service and high-quality firewood to our customers throughout New Hampshire. We strongly recommend getting on the schedule early, as availability will be limited and pricing may continue to change.
Well, ash is almost gone, and some places have some serious issues with various Beech diseases, so down to maple and birch reliably...?
Still plenty of all four species here in the state (although ash is becoming more difficult to get as you mentioned). But why not sell oak? Endless supply up here. Still think it's borderline fearmongering in the advertisement.
I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Log loads have gotten more expensive and I’ve recently looked at buying cut and split wood but trucking costs leave too little meat on the bone unless I upped my prices considerably.
Made a lot of progress in the last 24 hours. Have a neighbor who always buys two cords of oak rounds so today was a great time to take care of that. Am contemplating a facebook ad to try and sells rounds “cut to your desired length.” Will mull it over tonight.
Ive thought of that myself. Have had a couple of customers that needed custom lengths over the years. One needed longs 20-24, the other 14". If you have the logs, baskets and room worth a shot. I just hate when customers change their mind after the fact. Probably get a deposit if they do.
I will be spending the next 3 days with the kids in Ocean City so I hit the pile hard the past few days. Have 14 logs left.
