I've had several J(H)eeps with that 4.0, and you could pretty much have run sawdust for oil and they would have kept going. They would leak like crazy, but those things were almost indestructible. I know mechanics who hated those 4.0 motors during the 'cash-for-clunkers' era because it took so long to burn the motor up. I ran Amsoil in a few older Harleys years ago but haven't used that brand in a long time. Appreciate the info.
That's a beautiful splitter. Yes they are heavy built, our 28HO is balanced well, I can roll it a little bit, but usually use the tractor or SxS. What's nice about yours too, reverse the tongue, split a pile and pull it forward, repeat. Have fun with that new toy...err...splitter
Run standard oil until that new engine is broken in a little...otherwise it could be a permanent oil burner.
I've never been one to drain a new engine to replace the factory motor oil; I'm not running high-performance motors. I have a few things that need an oil change, but I'm in agreement with you that the factory oil on the new splitter will be fine for the break-in period.
I did/do with all new stuff for about 10 hours. Keep in mind, many brand new stuff comes with full synthetic oils in them, not the old "Dino" oils. Even Stihl say's run synthetics. My one Honda generator say's nothing but synthetics.
That was a FV---------CKN Nightmare! My wife's friend traded in a Grand Cherokee with 47,000 miles on it with the 5.7 in it for a FREEKN Honda passport, The "Green new scam" had many people fooled!
Mine would only drip a couple drops a day out the rear main. I did however replace the valve cover gasket twice. It started to use about a qt of oil a month but I was putting a lot of highway miles on it. I was stationed down in Virginia and driving up to NJ on the weekends, I sadly sold it after that tour. It didn't owe me anything!!
I too have a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 which just turned 30 years old and 200,000 miles. I've had it for 20, starting to get rusty, Does leak oil (always has) but runs great. 5 speed manual tranny, will go anywhere in the snow. I'm going run it till the body falls off.
I think the 4.0 was Chryslers best engine ever!! My Cherokee had the 4.0 (HO) motor. That thing would scream when you stepped on it!
I never had any issues with that engine in any of the Jeeps I owned over the years (plenty of other mechanical issues, but none from the engine). A couple of the XJs I had.
Likewise with the CJ 5 and 7 with that engine in it, no engine problems, the Cherokee had fuel system issues last few years but other than that, bulletproof.
Actually after thinking about it, the CJ 5 and 7 and a Wagoneer I had was not a 4.0 HO, rather an in line 6cy 258 CI engine I think. Regardless, they were good engines.
Very nice looking Jeeps! We/My wife currently have a Wrangler Sport hard top 4 door with the 3.6. Pentastar motor. Spunky little motor but NOT the 4.0! I really miss my Cherokee I went back to a full size Pick up, I needed another truck.
The 4.0 is such a great engine! We had a 2003 Grand Cherokee with that engine. Transmission started going out…engine was still fine. I really want to pick up an early 2000’s Wrangler 5 speed with the inline 4.0. But back to the topic at hand. WOW! Nice splitter and a huge congrats! Certainly keep us posted. There’s a Wolf Ridge dealer not far from our VT place. For a few years, he sold splitters along side his well established automotive mechanic business. He retired from fixing vehicles, but still sells splitter. And irony….he and his family live on the same road as we do there.
Glad to hear there are 4.0 fans out there...guy I worked with has one in a older Cherokee...a real turd...seemed like when the electrical problems went away long enough to run it, it overheated and leaked oil all over. It wasn't just him either, he is a good mechanic and has been on all the jeep forums reading up on all the best tricks for em. I was starting to think that Jeep/AMC actually managed to screw up an inline 6!
I've owned quite a few Jeeps over the years (CJ7s, YJs, TJs, XJs, JKs, and a JL) and the 4.0 in the TJs and XJs were always the most reliable part of the vehicle (yes, they leaked, but I never had a 4.0 break down on me). If I could get a Jeep now, it would probably be a J10 or J20 Jeep pickup (although the Gladiator keeps growing on me). I still love the older box-style of the CJs and TJs but they're just too uncomfortable for me anymore and I haven't been true off-roading in years. The J10/J20 would make a great firewood truck. We've had a few in our lives, Back in 2004, I had a 1981, J20 with the 360 Ci motor. I only had it for a year, but DAMM did it suck gas! But boy was it full of Torque. I had it down in Chincoteague, Virginia. Sadly it had so much rust on it and the floor pans were so rusty water would come (IN) on a rainy day then drain back out!
Well I'm thinking he sold it to someone else. I texted last night as we had a tentative meet up today just hadn't set a time. I then PMed him thru FB twice. I see he saw it but no reply. I PMed again an hour later asking if it today was bad as I understand life happens. His reply was he was out of town at a hospital for a family member emergency and wouldn't be able to meet up today. I replied with condolences and asked if there was another day this week that works. He didn't view PM or reply. Not surprised. Betcha dollars to donuts someone else got it at his asking price and came right away. I knew I shouldve dropped everything and picked it up. Im more POed about peoples honer and their word and not surprised. I have his number so will haunt him this week.
