Congratulations on the Wolfe Ridge. You're gonna love that beast. Very similar to our 28HO, smaller frame/footprint. It will eat through some wood. But does just fine with 1 person running it to..

It will be sold (already have some potential interest and haven't advertised it yet). Not the best time of the year to sell a splitter, but it will sell eventually.

When I was looking at splitters over the last couple years with a hydraulic log lift, I almost pulled the trigger on a Wolfe Ridge but talked myself out of it due to the price and went with the Full Boar. There is nothing wrong with the Full Boar, and it is a good splitter for what it is, but at the end of the day it is still a budget machine (again, not that there is anything wrong with that; my budget Troy-Bilt has split countless cords of wood over the last 17 years and is still going strong). Maybe some of the reason is 'want' versus 'need', but I decided to order the Wolfe Ridge back when I turned 60 as a birthday present to myself. Without going into it too much, so many of the things I used to enjoy doing before the war I have little interest in anymore (some interest but a strong sense of indifference) and just about all of the toys have been sold (declining health has played a role in that as well). Granted I can't split firewood anywhere like I used to due to the health issues, however it is one thing I still enjoy, so why the heck not get a pro splitter? I have no shortage of timber to split with all these caterpillar-killed dead oaks, and while it may take me longer to get it done than those who are younger and healthier, I'm glad to have a machine that will chew right through everything.

That is a good reasoned statement and a man needs some toys/tools to keep his sanity in crazy world

Maybe I should start looking into a pro splitter. Ill be 60 in a couple years.

I've looked into getting a faster one than the current 27 ton Performance built one I use. Talked with the owner of super split when I considered a Super split kinetic splitter a couple years back.

I have a friend who has one, he hates it! If you get wood that's got some knots or funny grain, it'll kick back and won't split it! It's great on things like clean Maple or any real clean wood, I've seen him try and split some cherry one time, it wasn't have'n any of it. Stay with good o'l Hydraulics!

That's a stretch by several thousand. Closer to 9K with the extras I added.

Unfortunately, no. And it won't be going via the secret Santa route either. The new one is paid for, but it would be nice to recoup some $$ :makeitrain"

I looked into those as well as just about every splitter on the market. I considered the Wolfe Ridge 17VS vertical splitter but I don't sell firewood, I sometimes get some gnarly stuff, and I am happy with the beam-style. Do you 'need' a pro splitter? Only you an answer that, but like everything else in life, you get what you pay for.

    Thanks for the tip.

When I first saw one used those were my thoughts too. Supposedly it will go though knots with a second or third hit. Most of the wood I scrounge is ideal fodder for one.

Super split did develop a tougher splitter to handle elm when Dutch elm disease was killing them in the 1970's. Not sure of the model though.

I just like the speed of one. Champion is one of the "generic" hydro splitters I've considered as well. Supposedly they have a faster cycle time.

Daaang...that's some mighty fine reasoning there...I signed off on it before I was half done reading this!
My brother bought a pro splitter last fall...I think he had some buyers remorse during the time it was being built, but now that we have some hours on it, he's a happy camper.

Of course I don't need a pro model splitter. Being a one man operation with very limited room I can only produce so much wood. Of course as you know aging and physical limitations now play a larger role in that too.

With firewooding being my main hobby, I wouldn't mind having a pro model to speed things up a bit.

Ill check out the WR 17vs. I did enjoy standing and splitting when I worked for the guy at my Disney cut.

That's a nice machine he got! And trust me, I had some buyer's remorse over the months while the Wolfe Ridge was being built, right up until the day before it arrived, but now that it's here, I'm good with the purchase. Looking forward to cooler weather!

    And besides,

And you can't take money in the bank with you when you go, so might as well spend it on something to help keep your sanity.

EDIT! I just checked that one out and with the price range its out of the question. :faint:

Id just assume rig something up so a generic hydro could be used in a similar fashion. IINM walt has built them like that.
